Useless Items
« on: June 26, 2004, 09:34:19 am »
It would actually be nice if there were some useless items in PS, because they would add to RP and are just fun to have. Such examples of items are: Furniture, utensils, monster heads, toys, rare foods, and anything else you might think of.

P.S. I have a feeling that this was already mentioned, but I searched the forum already...

and that wasn\'t even the first one :P
Yes, having items that aren\'t imediatly useful is a good idea- that\'s why in MB there are crates throught the city, and trees, and fires, etc. Hopefully in CB we will be able to interact with them, even it\'s just to burn yourself in a fire. :P

*Slaps self*

*Slaps self again*

Well actually this forum is a bit different :P
He\'s talking about filling up the streets with NPCs, etc...
But I\'m talking about actual items that players can pick up, look at, show off, and...uh...eat? =D

Back to your comment about crates and such, that doesn\'t really do much to immersion. I would much rather have crowded streets of peasants, children playing through, an occasional yelling of a bargainer, etc. etc....

Sorry about all the disorganization, I feel...

tired..

*munches crate*
I don\'t really know why it would be good to eat useless items.

:)

Well, most likely these items would not be bought in any noticable quantity because they don\'t do anything. Therefore, most ppl. will not waste their money on them. Also, if they are to be useful for roleplaying, they would need to be visible and therefore take the same effort as other stuff that\'ll be used more commonly. Maybe, just maybe, these would become some sort of status symbol if they would be reasonably expensive and showy. There should be items like that for each social sector, however. I can hardly imagine a farmer dining off golden plates... Also, it\'d be hard to imagine a wealthy merchant to show off with a well-bred cow. Or at least not every merchant. ;)

Interaction with environmental decoration (crates, etc.) IMO adds a _great deal_ of immersion, because I really hate it if I just can\'t cut that candle with a sword, or melt it with a torch or grab it for light, burn the library... I mean, use it to read... ;)
There are many non-destructive uses for stuff as well. It\'s just that it becomes most apparent that the environment isn\'t really there if you start destroying things.

Well... now I have 3 yellow stars, so I guess I\'m happy :)

I just realized... useless items have already been implemented!

Sorry, I\'m just feeling cynical ;P

I think things like cherppow\'s (sp?) paint canvas will be found in the homes of the wealthy, etc. These would only be useless after an artist has painted on them though.... (linky to the thread: http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?boardid=22&threadid=8706&page=1#5 )

Useless loot stresses the servers and rarely gets picked up, however...! I can agree to rarities in loot, or found somewhere hidden in the world, and 50 diffrent kinds of clothes, all being there simply for the fun of it. However, \"useless\" items should indeed be very rare, so they would not exactly be as useless as some might think. A monster head on a plate works as a great trophy for a trophy hall, and an elegant looking dress looks great on most female characters (not sure if enki\'s would like wearing dresses...). They\'re all useless, but they look excellent, and that makes some people buy them.

Anyway, all items should have a use, whether it is a lucky charm lizard foot, a pint of rat blood or a trophy of a dragon, it should have some use or value, otherwise it will not be desired by players, and will be dumped somewhere until it decays or the server crashes because of the immense stress the many items cause on the server.

[Edit: Excellent spelling! Good work!... Not.]

Yeah... I love useless items.  I propose hats.  Or otherwise silly player mountable objects.  Like this giant smiley head.

If getting to walk around like that isn\'t desirable, I don\'t know what is.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

And even if painted on, they are not useless. They need to be grounded anyway, so you can paint on top of the previous art a couple of times, AFAIK. Also, Books can be reused, they did scratch the ink off them in the medieval times.

An item should never be *completly* useless. It could rather be hard to figure out WHAT a certain item could be used to. A monster head can be used in a helmet, but it should\'nt be a common item that MUST be used to make a helmet. I\'ve just read another thread wishing for the possibility of making books. Now, if you have a book that says, that and that item can be used to make a helmet or shield that gives ST+1 Wi+2 etc, you could quickliy know were to sell  that item to make bucks out of it. But, since no such books are made at the beginning, people must experiment to figure out what a item can do. It should ofcourse be different degrees out of items, damages and undamaged items, or flawless items. All giving different values and so on.

(hope my english don\'t suck as much as i think)
