consider your second wish granted. a game built by volenteers and hoasted by people only supporting because its free, if they charged for the game fragnetics would prolly charge alot or drop em so would the dev team.

I\'m sorry to disagree. The GPL does not forbid you making money using it. You can even sell GPL\'d stuff, but of course anyone you sell it to would be free to make as many copies for as many ppl. as they wish.

Also, you have the right to use GPL stuff to create services for which you charge ppl., like using Apache for commercial webhosting. So they could perfectly well leave the code GPLd, but charge ppl. for access to the servers. After all, they have reserved total control of the content (read the PS license, it\'s educating). you therefore could only take the code, but you would not be allowed to use music, sounds, graphics, models, not even the rules, to create an unofficial server or to connect to some unofficial server, whatever game it might be.

You therefore could take the sourcecode and use this to make an own game, with new content and rules, for which you then charge ppl. The only thing you\'d need to do is to provide the sourcecode for the client, nothing else.

It doesn\'t take Microtheft to do it, and, actually, M$ actually is doing the best it can to get rid of the GPL and Free Software in general (see my sig for more details).
