real newbie questions...
« on: August 20, 2004, 12:52:54 am »
... you\'ve probably been asked before. But I\'m wondering... If everything\'s free, how do you survive ? You all have a personal fortune ? You don\'t need to work ?
I would really like to know because when I start a mmorpg it is for a while and I would not want this new game to die before he is born.

As you guessed this was asked before you should make use of the handy search button ;)

Anyway, all of the developers are volunteers, and the server has been donated.  Most of the devs have jobs, but work on this in their spare time.

There arn\'t many MMORPGs that have gone this far.
With the current codebase it\'s very easy to implement new stuff.

The most work is \"invisible\" for the normal player, but if you look at our code and most other games, you will notice that PS code is flexible.

Working with PS is very fun IMO, and I think that if we got this far, nothing can stop us to go further

I think it\'s great that you\'re able to provide a game of such quality for free, but there\'s one thing I\'m wondering about:

Once Planeshift really gets going and get popular, there\'s definitely going to be loads of people playing it, and the current single server won\'t be able to handle all the players, so what happens then?

Again, please use the Search tool. When Fragnetics is no longer able to support the game world by itself, other donated servers will be introduced and linked together, effectively pooling their resources. In this way, the developers hope to keep the community as one, and not split them up into a bunch of different servers.
