Yes, or better: no. Nothing should yield XP, but everything should yield skill increase, in the skill in use and also, to a limited degree, in related skills. You don\'t learn how to cook by fighting, just as you don\'t learn to dance by mining. ;) However, you do learn how to fight by hunting, and how to cook by doing alchemy, albeit remotely.

ya, one of the things i loved in Myth of soma;

the skills increased by using them. But atm minning isnt giving nothing, this should be solved easily. Why isnt it giving anything? the is probably a good reason for it.. Any dev likes to give some comment?

It really should make you stronger, in the very least.  Ever swung a pick?  It\'s hard work.  I personaly think assignable exp is silly.

You can too learn cooking from fighting!  How else are you going to learn how to cut your meat? :D

Mining should increase a few skills.... it is jus\' how it should work, or a chunk of realism and fun is taken out...

I totally agree. I don\'t like this current system of \"go kill rats and rogues, gain PP >> Spend PP to train in Crystal Way magic\". Ludicrous. :P

I couldn\'t find the coloured bars explained in the Player\'s Guide, and yes, it\'s a bit too confusing.

Basically, red is the \'untrained\' bits. Green is how much theoretical experience (read: trained by NPCs) the skill has. Once your green bar covers all the blue stuff, you need to use that skill to get practical experience, which then levels the skill up.

Wait a second... isn\'t it yellow? Wait, what does blue mean then? On second thought I can\'t remember there being any red colour anymore...

...give me a while... I\'m lost. Ignore my post, magic has me stumped. :P

Mining should gain XP, but only a VERY LITTLE amount.

Like... a sixth of what you get for fighting rats or something.

Or an eigth...

Or an 8 4/72

<_<

I\"m with you on this all the way.

However, the idea I\'ve always had would unfortunately require some coding.  It comes down to some of the experience you get is directly applied to what it is you\'re doing and some of it is more general.  Say 1/2 and 1/2.  Half goes to the skill you\'re working on and half goes into a pool that you can use for any skill.
Doing things just for the halibut.

I believe no exp from mining is only for now, since it\'s early testing :P

anyway

blue bar - how much you can train with current number of progression points
yellow to green bar - how much training you still need
red bar - how much skill practicing you still need

- Swords

and the more practice you\'ve had, the more yellow becomes visible?

already thought it was something like this, but its good to hear it Moog and Drak :)

and about the experience, PP or whatever. How its being arranged is a whole other topic. I agree that the PP/exp thing is wrong. You should only be able to gain some \'skill\' in what you use (minning trains: minning and strength a bit).

But what i wanted to bring into discussion was, why fighitng/ magic does gives you exp (just to give it a name), but minning isn\'t? It\'s all still testing, finding out what settings will work ok..

ok for the skill bar thing:

For every skill you have no training in currently, you have a big yellow bar followed by a big red bar.
As you use PP and money at trainers, the yellow bar fills with a big green bar.  When the green bar totally fills the yellow bar, you have enough theoretical experience to start learning some practical experience.  So, when the green totally fills the yellow bar, and the blue bar goes away for that skill, and all that is left is green and red, you have to go out and use that skill till the green fills the entire bar.  Once that happens you rank up, you get one more added to the number beside the bar.  And the yellow and red bars return.  The little blue bar is how much theoretical experience you can get if you spend all of your current PP\'s.  And when you are done learning the theoretical experience for that rank of that skill the blue bar disappears leaving only the green and red bars.

Hope that helps some.
