CB hangs in login screen and linux/xserver hangs with it.
« on: January 11, 2005, 09:46:32 pm »
I\'ve compiled with the instructions at http://laanx.fragnetics.com/debian.php and used the updater succesfully, but when I start psclient and am eager to try it, it stops answering before I get to even do anything with the login screen. Linux hangs with it(maybe because xserver hangs?) and leaves only the mouse working, and so I have to push the button(is there anything else I could do) and force the restart. I have had broblems with other games hanging also so the might be with my setup(Radeon 9000, debian testing with xfree86 4.3). Where the broblem might be. I\'m thinking about switcing to x 4.4, could that be useful? Also the client(updater and psclient) gives me warnings something like this: unreleased module crystalspace.***, what about that? Thanks in advance.

Why isn\'t anybody helping my case? Isn\'t this the place to ask something like this?

Anyway, i\'m using the 2.6 kernel, and tried with Ubuntu(which has an improved xfree86 4.3) live-cd getting the same result so I don\'t think it has to do with my having bossibly screwed up my debian installation. It hangs at the default x-display, but works somewhat when I do new login with a new display. In the new x-display it works very slowly and can\'t connect to the gameserver. Here is the output I get when I run psclient:

It\'s the same with /CS/walktest, so it has propably something to do with the CS engine, so should I ask the CS guys about it?

Xlib: connection to \":0.0\" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Don\'t run it as root. Try with different code - do a cvs update every once in a week (it will work sometimes). If you don\'t want it to freeze your X, always run it in windowed mode. You use mesa, that is slow by default.

What\'s with the
\"
Xlib: connection to \":0.0\" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
 \"
thing?

I\'ve always run it in window mode, but it still jams my x.

\"You use mesa, that is slow by default.\"
What else could I use(and how)? How can I change it to be faster?
I\'m at the moment compiling planeshift, so let\'s see.

The Xlib thingy says it can\'t find the X server
You should install graphicdrivers, which are probably your problem here.

Also, if X seems to be frozen, that\'s not linux.
Just press CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE and it will quit X (and restart it if you\'re in runlevel 5)

I haven\'t had the broblem you described(the xlib thingy that is), the question was for lynx_lupo.

Now it doesn\'t hang my x, it doesn\'t even get to the login screen. Hers is the output:

EDIT:***

Sorry if that confused somebody, I had removed a lot of header packages by accident. Now I\'m building again whith the headers.

I think you should start with checking your graphics drivers like Androgos said. You proberly don\'t have 3D support. Xfree has free open source drivers but they have none to very sucky 3D support. Nvidia and Ati also offer drivers you can download from their website. Find yourself a good howto for installing ati drivers on debian.

I was stupid to upgrade to x 4.3pre10etc and am now donwgrading. Lets see if that solves something.

EDIT:

I screwd my debian so badly that I decided to do fresh install and after that restore some of the settings etc. I hope that after that I could maybe try the CB linux installer and so forth. If and when I have broblems, I\'ll post a new thread instead of using this one. Thanks for the advise anyway(it didn\'t really help though).

I don\'t understand it. Try running planeshift with \"DISPLAY=:0 psclient\". Be sure you do not run planeshift from linux text(mode) console. Use some x-terminal (xterm, gnome-terminal,...). Try run any X application before psclient ( like xeyes, xterm, xlogo, mozilla and glxgears are), if you get connection refused by server, you have no permission to run X application from that terminal, you\'ll have to solve it, before you can play PS :(
If all except planeshift run, I can\'t help you. Perhaps you should investigate your graphics drivers( mesa is software-rendering, it\'ll be terribly slow unless you have dual Opteon 3GHz :) )
