Running PlaneShift on XBOX...

Since XBOX can run its own Gentoo and Debian distros respectively called Gentoox and Xebian, and USB Mouse and Keyboard can be attached to it, I was wondering if I could play PlainShift in my console.

The question is: How much processor and memory does PS need in Linux? Would be the 700 Mhz Processor and 64 MB RAM (upgradable) in the xbox enough? How much disc space? (xbox has a 8 Gb HD).

It would be great to play PS anywhere...

Both the CPU and the memory, mostly the memory might be a little weak.

usually, we recommend using atleast 256 MB ram, preferably 512

I would say the cpu is fine (I play on a pII 400mhz with decent speed) and 8gigs is plenty, but the ram is much too low.  I have 128mb and I need to lower the texture resolution to stop the constant swap usage.

But if you can upgrade the memory(I didn\'t know you could do this) than that would be a very cool set up.  Let us now if it works!

I\'m not familiar with Gentoox, but will the resolution of the TV come into play?  A standard TV has a resolution lower than 640 iirc (which is much too low for CS obviously).  Maybe it won\'t be a problem at all, but a possibility I\'d think.

What you guys don\'t realise is, the reason consoles have a lot slower processors then pcs and memory, yet still have stunning games running at high detail with no lag, is because consoles do not have to run operating systems and all this backround bull , you just pop in the cd and play . Personally I have never used an Xbox, but I imagine if all you need to do is burn planeshift to a dvd and try to play it in your xbox (does it work like that with the other stuff you tried?) It could run fine.

uh first of all yes consoles do have an os (I believe xbox has some form of linux running).  and no, you don\'t just \"pop in the cd\", as he said in his post he already has gentoo running and he will copy the game to his xbox\'s harddrive

Hmmm a little late maybe.
But here\'s my little thought of the whole thing.

Since xbox is a Microsoft console it doesn\'t use Linux as retail (even if it would be cool if it had Linux from retail).
The xbox has a stripped down Windows 2000 OS (the core is about 500kb on the xbox version).
Planeshift should be able to run fine on the xbox if you can get it working. I guess that the biggest problem would actually be to get Planeshift to accept the graphicscard as it is a custom one from nVidia and not a regular GF 4200.

With a little tweaking in the code, yes it would be possible to get it running fine I guess.

Hope that solves something atleast...

you\'d have to strip out the origional os (you really think M$ wants you to do this when they will practally sue linux to death is they had the chance?).  personally i\'d probably run it off of some form of CD, hard drives are the slowest part in a pc.  after that, running it should be a sinch.  as for the ram problem, it actually should work decent enough with the stock 128, you can upgrade that if you want but say good by to your warrenty

Nope Planeshift will not run on the xbox. Currently there is no 3D support under the xbox (no the linux nvidia drivers do not work) so planeshift will not run.

The only way you can do that stuff to my knowledge is to install a mod chip, and their for you will nead to open the cast. And considering one of the screws is under the warrenty sticker, just opening the case voids the warrenty.

And what about recompiling PlaneShift using the XBOX SDK? That would make it run without any need of OS, and from the DVD drive.

The problem with that is my lack of programming knowledges ;(

I am not expert on x-box in any way. But I hope I can help you to find out couple of answers on your questions.
Please read Xbox-Linux project FAQ. These people know way more about programming on Xbox than I do. You will see that there is little ( or no) chance planeshift will work on x-box.
Microsoft is all except free&open source friend and won\'t allow abuse of its own console by free & open source folks ( which Planeshift dev team members are). Unless xbox have 3d linux driver from nvidia it will be just crappy router or cluster node.
