Does xp do anything to your overall stats or does it just give you progression points?

It just gives you progression points. If you have enough progression points and enough tria (money) you can use it to train your skills or your stats. There are several NPC?s that will give you all kinds of trainings.

Very well said hitancrias. Basically, when you have enough PP\'s (Progression Points) and money, you can go to random and scattered NPC\'s and train with them to get your skills better.
