Damage System
« on: August 21, 2002, 03:44:58 pm »
I was wondering what damage system would be used because a friend and I came up with a decent system of our own.

Instead of the whole body taking damage, one of the 5 major parts would take damage; Head, Torso, r Arm, l Arm, r Leg, and l Leg.
Each part would have a % of your total hit points and depending on the attack it could be a one hit kill or just bounce off armor.  This would increase the importance of a helmet.
If a part of ur body runs out of hit points, (dies) it cannot be used and the bleeding damage would goto the next nearest body part, unless it?s the torso.  If the torso dies, ur heart stopped.  But if ur head dies ur knocked out for a round you would wake up and ur bleeding damage would go to torso. (u can change that if you want heh)

Also bleeding.  if you don\'t stop the bleeding then you could die.  This would bring clerics or healers in more.  That and everybody would want to be able to heal themselves so they would take ranks in healing/medicine.

Any questions just ask.  We had a few ideas for a magic system but i am not sure if that\'d work for this game.

I just came to think that, the most effective shield ever would be something like a ruined left arm, lol, use your arm as defence because it can\'t loose any more hp, haha
/me imagines a play walking around with half his body dead while covering hits with it.

That system needs to be fuzzed up a bit but it sounds kinda phun.

Actually, i have seen this used in Evil Islands: Curse of the Lost Soul. It was fairly cool since if you sneaked up on a monster, you could target his head by pressing some button, and the damage would be calculated acording to your weapon+surprise+head shot, and if you are lucky, you could have killed that monster in one shot. I think this idea is great :D

Evil Islands is a complete rip-off from Vagrant Story too. It begins by the weapon creation and the char screen, but I think I\'ve already forgot the game have also the body-part-hit thing.

this would go great with my plan for REAL combat, where you do the attacking, combat would be like a FPS, but the amount of damage and things like that would depend on skill, lotsa fun methinks.

Check the GURPS hit location system out.

Its basicly as you describe, with a tad bit more detail and works really well.

GURPS is published by Steve Jackson games ltd.

Im using a similar system in my on computer game.  Figured sense no other MMORPG would support flying and aquatic player class/races, might as well do as someone else sugested and code my own.    :D
