Upadter cannot update itself (WinXP)
« on: April 01, 2005, 12:42:00 am »
The updater try to access a file (Libcurl.dll) which is used.
updater.exe --auto don\'t help.

I have already made a thread stating the updater problem. All you have to do is simple close the updater (leave the black box running) and it should start itself up and update the files.
Of course you should fight fire with fire, you should fight everything with fire.   :P  Xantherus Icer  :P

once the updater loaded the new release and refuses to update, ignore errors, and close.
Then look into the Planeshift Directory for a subdir called updatertemp
Copy all the files inside this subdir into the game directory. Replace all files
You have now the new updater and you can launch it to update the other parts of the game

much simpler is to close the updater then click retry and it just copies the files over, they obviously lost the bit or code that closes the old one!!

***added after second or third attempt***
OK I see where my issue is. My question is...into what folder do I place the ONE file I found in that folder (updater temp).
I found a zipped file, UNzipped it into its own file (probably where my error is). The file name is \"repository. XML\" (which means exactly NOTHING to me, so I don\'t know what it is or where it belongs...and I think my system is having the same trouble)

Oh and the advice to just close updater and then restart the updater doesn\'t work for me. I have done that (I start the game using the updater due to the \"launch Planeshift\" button on the lower right hand side of the updater, that way IF there is an update...I know it and get it.), but each time this same file gets downloaded.

Again many thanks for the time/effort to help! I truly appreciate it!
***end added content***

Sorry to resurrect this issue, but I tried to open the Updater temp box, and found it empty each time (put game into windowed mode and checked after logging ALL the way in and found this folder empty...after! it downloaded the same files for the fourth day in a row \"updater\" and some numbers.

I am sure that my lack of knoweldge on technical issues is getting in my way. I am just trying to help figure out how this issue can stop coming up again (and possibly again and again, and get annoying to forum readers due to seeing the same topic in ten threads).

I will go and retry opening that temp folder...maybe since I got a good rest...I might figure it out this time.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.
