multi-command macros and textual emotes
« on: April 15, 2005, 03:41:49 pm »
This has already been the subject of a thread of october 2002 (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=1836&boardid=11&sid=9c0c42815305a7d983f7204b26846df4&page=2#0) but, as many things have been implanted since this year, this new thread is to discuss about an improvement of current system which is the realization of ol\' thread wish.

Expressing emotions with a 3D animation is complex, can be done only by developpers, and cannot satisfy completely any player who has aready his own personal vision of his character. So, to complete 3D emotes, textual emotes are very convenient!

Currently, textual emotes can be done with shortcuts, but the problem is that it is not possible to put several actions in it:

sample_shortcut:
/me gets the wide shield hanging in his back and draws a sword from it...
     /equip big_shield
     /equip broad_sword
/relate You perceive brownish stains on his blade, as he twirls it.

In this case, only the /equip big shield is taken into account.

Having such macros could permit to personnalize simply one\'s character, and to make him deeper for the other players.

An important thing that should be to prevent abusive use of macros, so to limit the number of active commands (cast, attack, etc... opposed to passive like say, tell, shout, equip...) to avoid such kinds of abuse:
     /cast Fireball
     /cast Fireball
     /cast Fireball
     /me does his hair again
     /cast Blizzard
     /cast Thunderstorm_strike
     /me grins
     /cast Heart_Attack

For spells it could enable to use magic with verbal incantantion:
/me opens his arms, turn palms downwards and relax his hands, and says with a weird guttural voice: \"I beseech you, Spirit of the Nature, to entrust me with you powers so I become one with the ground...\"
     /cast Rock Armor
/relate His skin has been covered with large blocks of rock; only his still visible eyes recall you his human nature.

In order to prevent bandwith saturation, it would be nice if once a shortcut is called, all consecutive calls of the same shortcut during 10 minutes do the same action but DO NOT display textual messages.

This is actually a pretty good idea, I particularly like the part about incantations for magic.
