it\'s kind of hinted at in the in the player\'s guide. that smiths use at some of the red way in their craft. i picked up a book on blacksmithing, as i\'m reading through i wonder exactly how the use of fire magics will effect the way that smithing is performed.
for example welding metals together some rather tricky heating work is required. mostly because the temperature requried to weld iron and steel is fairly close to the temperature it which they burn. using coal or charcoal as the fuel the heating is rather coarse. the usual trick to weld steel to iron was to stack them and hold them in the fire until the right heat was obtained.
now with fire magics it would be possible to have much finer control of the temperature. for example so you could heat the two metals that you are welding to the exact temperature required with out having to resort to little tricks.
additionally the forge would be different as well. most of the design of the forge is designed around containing the fire and redirecting the heat from it. while redirecting heat is still of interest, a large fire would no longer be needed to generate the heat required. basically a simple fire spell would be able to do the job.
however, one of the aspects of using a real fire is that most of the oxygen is consumed in the fire itself. this prevents the formation of metal oxides on the metal being worked. at this point i\'m not sure red way magics will acheive this.
okay class. discuss.
