Having Problems... (Computer going to sleep...)
« on: July 22, 2005, 07:16:22 pm »
I\'m new to Planeshift and I\'ve only had it for a day. (Well, two, if you count the downtime on the server yesterday.) Once I finally made my character and got into the game, I can only play it for a few minutes before the screen goes black and my computer alerts me that it\'s going to sleep, meaning that it\'s restarting.

It does this completely without my directions, and only when I play the game.

Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a solution?

Help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Nope, never happened to me... I just need to point out how funny this is... :P

/me runs off laughing

...

/me wanders back and realizes he should be more useful

Is this on a laptop, by any chance?  If I ever play a game on my laptop without it plugged in, the GPU will drain all the power in 15 min and force it to go to sleep to save itself...

No, it\'s on a regular computer. A three year old Compaq running on an Emachine CPU, to be specific.

But I do have a bunch of crap that I don\'t use on it... Including The Sims 2, Ragnarok Online, OZ, Furcadia...

Could it be that I don\'t have enough space on my computer?

i think  that would tend to exhibit differently.

you\'ve checked the power saver settings? and if any keyboard shortcuts have been mapped to the sleep mode?
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.

Hm, maybe your computer think the game is boring and falls asleep when you play it?

Seriously, my guess is that you have to little RAM or possibly that your CPU/GPU gets overheated. Or it could be some completely random windows problem on your side that can most likely be resolved by formating.

Hm... Well, I deleted some of the games I don\'t play anymore... I\'m going to see if it works now.

EDIT: Well, I guess that wasn\'t it. :/ I was able to play for a solid three minutes before it kicked me off and my computer restarted.

I have no idea what else it could possibly be, so I guess I\'ll just have to uninstall the game. Hnn. Six hours of my life went into a download that\'s unplayable. :(

Wait... that\'s something else entirely.  It is quite possible for something to jam so bad it restarts.  (or flat-out power-off...)  Something in Windows may be jamming.  Update your DirectX and graphics drivers.

It\'s not that the graphics fuzz up and the computer restarts, it\'s just that the game will be running fine and then EVERYTHING GOES OFF and it restarts, so I doubt it\'s my graphics card...

When your computer reboots mid-game, it\'s pretty likely that either your cpu or gpu(graphics card) gets overheated or overloaded. This is a built in windows feauture, when the cpu gets to hot it reboots, otherwise it would explode into tiny bits etc.

It could also be a blue screen of death that makes your pc restart. (windows setting, instead of showing the BSOD it reboots). First you should check your hardware temperature under load, then if thats not the problem you should consider reformatting your harddrive(s).

As odd2k says when your computer restart in that way it might be the CPU or the GPU.
I would recommend to check that your computer fan is working properly and, maybe searching on some newsgroup or forum, if your computer model or graphic card has overheat issues.

I wouldn\'t suggest formatting your harddrive, I just don\'t see how that would help.

It\'s also not a windows feature to reboot when your CPU overheats.  Any rebooting due to overheating will most likely be a built in failsafe (check your BIOS).  PS is probably the most CPU and GPU intensive program you\'ve ever tried to run, so ensure that you have a decent cooling system and check your temperatures.

Clearing up your harddrive of unused programs or formatting is probably not going to help you.  It\'s most likely a hardware problem.

Also, upgrading your graphics drivers might help.  There aren\'t a lot of things besides hardware problems that could cause your computer to restart like this, but problems with your graphics drivers could definitely be one.

Updating DirectX won\'t do anything for you with respect to this problem.

If running windows:

There\'s an option at sytem properties-advanced options-start and recovering-config- uncheck automatically restart.

Also it sounds like overheating as people stated, or maybe you\'re running a beta release driver of your videocard that it isn\'t working 100% reliable.
Are there any MoonSeekers left?

Yeah, I was thinking it was a graphics driver related problem...  I think my train of thought was something like:

Granted, though, it\'s just easier to turn off sound all together...  Nevermind...

Yeah... um... update your drivers and check your fans.  Use the game server as an example...  :P

If none of the suggestions here pan out, post your system specs.
