Level playing field for everyone?
« on: August 02, 2005, 06:43:04 pm »
Since it seems to have been established that the wipe is and has taken place...

I read that some people will be able to import characters from another version of the game, will these characters be above starting levels?

How will the game handle so many \'new\' users at the same time? In my experience scripted NPC\'s tend not to deal well with 100+ people pounding it for info/buy/sell all at the same time.

Will training areas be overrun with not enough to kill?

Will groups/guilds of older players camp or block off training areas to power level?

While the new treasure generator is being tweaked won\'t that make the economy unstable.

A second wipe was mentioned after everything is tweaked out, will this just be an item wipe, or another character wipe as well? For instance; player gets uber item from rat which allows player to level really fast, item is taken away.. but player still has all the exp gained from using the unbalanced item.

Just some thoughts from a new player trying to decide whether or not to invest alot of time in a new game :)
I realive most of these questions can\'t be answered until they actualy happen.

MB people will start rich, not at high levels.  Though, yes, I agree this probably shouldn\'t be.

As far as I know, NPC\'s will work just fine.  I don\'t expect there to be any insane deluge of people on the server.  And, they won\'t all be doing the same things at the same time.  Don\'t worry about this part.

Some areas might be crowded, yes.  But hopefully we won\'t all have to be in the sewers forever anymore.

Maybe.  Though, because I don\'t think this update brings collision detection... so just walk through them.  If they\'re camping and you can\'t get a hit in, you might just have to find a new spot.  Things just might get crowded, but if it\'s not, and the guy\'s just being an ass, go ask for help in the plaza.

Yes, that\'s what wipe #2 is for.

Yes, this is an issue.  As I\'ve already said in other threads, I think the second wipe should be full just like the first.

(BTW, somebody please move this to General Discussion...)

The only reason there would be a second whipe to delete all item is if there is a problem with the new drop system they are implementing.    This, as far as we know may not even happen

To further that, it wont take long for a dev to notice that there is a problem, fix it, so you\'re probabily talking about... what... maybe one or two level advantage over you? and if there is a problem with the system chances are everyone will get that same unbalanced item...

I constantly see posted that this game is still in \"tech demo\" stages, so playing, i asume should be in good faith of helping devlopment and giving input, not to play properly and get attached to it as if it was a final release...   so it shouldnt matter if somone get a uber unbalanced wepon and gains 2 levels ahead of you.

Hmm.. good point Lukus.

But even at this stage of the game, MMO\'s tend to become addictions fairly quickly  Since character development can take a very long time, most veteran games go into a new game knowing there will likely be a substantial time commitment.

It\'s just good to get as much information as possible before \'wasting\' weeks or months of you life.

I\'m not suggesting anything negative about Planeshift, on the contrary it looks to have a bright future and I hope it does very well.

Well, this game isn\'t so much powerlevel oriented, the main focus is roleplay.

You don\'t get experience from using better weappons, you get the same amount of progression points if you kill with a mug or with your bare hands as for killing with a platinum sword.

I think he was refering to the fact, a sword with 100+ attack points is going to help you kill and level up faster and thus gain more EXP than somone with a weapon with only 20 attack.

True, and I heartily agree, but if someone is camping out to powerlevel, it makes things harder for the rest of us trying to play the game \"right.\"

*nods* True, but, as Lukus said, a better weapon will help you beat more challenging opponents and gain experience faster than a weaker one will.

In the future, killing things with a sword will gain you sword XP, not a \'general XP\' that you can spend on other unrelated skills. That will make much more sense than the current system. :)
