Possible Distribution with LDIOS
« on: August 16, 2005, 06:07:12 pm »
Hey, one of the devs will hopefully read over this.

Im wanting to distribute Planeshift (pre configured and working!). With a Distro of Linux im working on called LDIOS.

The premise of the distro is to open up linux to users (the 90% of users who play games, download from limewire and just want a usable system) . Each time i make a new ISO i want to distribute the lastest version of Planeshift with it.

LDIOS is in test 4 stage, and the next release will hopefully have enhanced graphical configuration systems and will be easy to set up.

Check it out on http://www.ldios.undergroundhangout.com/ .

Is there a specific format you\'re looking for, like .rpm? The .run binary installer that we\'re using currently would work for you want I\'d think.

Packaging

Well, the type of file you\'re looking for is going to be dependant on what sort of packaging system your linux distro uses.  My guess (since this is aimed at the beginner linux user) is that it is going to be a .deb debian based system since it has one of the best packaging systems...(I know Gentoo\'s is way cooler with the ebuilds, but come on! No novice likes to wait like that).   If it is I would think it would be relatively easy to create a .deb file from the binary compiled version, once it has been tested to work on your distro.  Deb\'s are fairly easy to create I think, I\'m not sure about RPM\'s, but I would assume they are similar?  Then once it is in a deb, just go ahead and tar.bz2 it or whatever you\'re compressing the iso files with and have it go in the installer list.

Well, Im not sure now, Someone else was dealing with the package system. As far as im away we were moving from Slackware to Debian, or possibly a new Unified Linux package standard.

Ill let you know. Will automatic update work for the Linux disto of planeshift?
