Scimitar
« on: August 29, 2005, 01:11:06 am »
I thought maybe I should try my hand at a little weapon modeling, and I am a big fan of R.A. Salvatore\'s Forgotten Realms books, so I thought of making a scimitar with a blue glow to it. Please tell me what you think and keep in mind I have never taken any classes for any 3D modeling program and I learn on my own, with little tips from my brother. The whole scimitar needs texture work, and it needs a better hilt and all that, plus the glow is merely a copy of the scimitar, scaled to be a bit bigger and then set around it, and also made blue and transparent. I made this in 3DS MAX 6 and it is made with a block and a cylinder. Please give me feedback.

not bad at all, practice makes perfect, i use max 6 too :)
if ya look at the stickies in this section it points ya around to some handy guides Arcanefalcon made/knows of

I\'m not a very good critic but the hadle could definately have some curve or bow in it, and the guard seems blocky, carve some definition into that and your well away :)

Thank you! As I said I am new to modeling. I will see to that handle immediately, might get a small preview in tonight. I am not much for the terms of a scimitar but I am assuming the guard is the curve in the back. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Ok, here is partly what I am aiming for on the new handle. I might be adding a bit more of a bend to it, as well as a bit more detail. I have to learn how to do texturing better, but I like to mess with the programs textures as well, especially the multilayer ones, which i used for the bottom of the handle.

Same rule goes with this one as with the last one.

I also started a small icon for it, but it needs a bit of work... I did this icon in MS Paint, so don\'t expect perfection.

Ok, here is updated scimitar. I still have to do a lot of work on it, but the handle is a little changed, and I slightly adjusted the curve of the back of the blade, but I will have to adjust it some more later. I took off the glow because it sorta looked weird to me. Tell me what ya think, anyone.

Not bad.  http://www.poopinmymouth.com has some pretty good tutorials on it, for 3ds max and in general (no, that\'s really a good site, I\'m not trying to be gross, seriously).
