Skill Idea=Less Boring!
« on: October 29, 2002, 05:03:31 am »
Well, its been a long time since i\'ve contributed an idea to PS, even longer since ive contributed a GOOD one, so i decided to see what i could come up with, and here it is:

this is kind of hard to explain as im not really sure how the skill system is going to work exactly, but i have a pretty good idea

anyways, say your an expert at cooking or fighting or whatever and you\'ve reached a certain skill level where you\'ve gotten bored with this skill, now when you started your character you were going all out on this, going to be the best there ever was or will be.....but not its gotten old and you want to be a fighter instead, but that would mean reconstructing yourself almost totally

so, once a player reaches a certain skill level/% (whatever) they should be able to give a certain % to some other skill, now to make it more interesting it will not be permanent, so you\'d be like a mage for a day...and if you really like it you make another mage character instead of uselessly wasting your time

of course the % would not be much, just enough to give you a boost to see what its like in the long run

Only exp. should get this chance though, and they can only do it once or twice, otherwise people would be changing every day....

so there it is, more ideas next month :P

A good point of a nice skill tree, is that players will al have different lvls of skills.
Not like in Helbreath were one setting is the best and every person is going for that setup.
Your \'own\' skill setup is just as personal as your charaters nick. I think there shouldnt be a way of changing your skills if you dont like it (too bad, its the way you trained). And like in most games, there propably will be potions to lvl a certain skill for a certain time, this boost has almost the same effect.

Keep brainstorming Kiern.

yea i dont really like this idea much. from what ive heard there will be no limit on any skill. even if your an expert fighter you could still become a grand spellcaster to if you desired. that i do like.

Well, since we\'re on topic, are we going to have a system like that of Dungeon Siege?

And also, r we going to have their dress system as well?
(u buy/get a suit of armor, then u can see urself wearing it in game)

I like th idea of changing your stats once in a while. You could play around until you got skills you liked. Never played Dungeon Siege yet, heard it rocks. What if this point system changy thing only went to oddball skills like animal taming and shrubbery trimming? Where as major skills like sword fighting and spell casting you could only change a very small percent a day? Or was that the idea that was just being talked about?

Use em, or they atrophy.  That might make someone stick to something a bit better than otherwise.  Then maybe you were a grandmaster swordsman but you started studying magic, so your ability with swords slowly degrades, representing a limited supply of time.  But then, some skills are like riding a bike, and others are like weight-lifting.  So the designers would have to figure out which ones would lose a more permanent sense and which ones would lose a more temporary sense.

I agree with the idea langwiz proposed. Perhaps, when your skill degrades with the passage of time, but you start training in it, you improve slightly faster than normal(until you reach the maximum level you got before you stopped using it).

I\'ll explain what I mean it with the example of the grandmaster swordman. Let\'s put a number to his swordfighting skills...let\'s say, level 10 (It is just an example, I don\'t have the slightest idea about how the skill progression will work, so don\'t take it too seriously). He starts leveling in magic then, and neglects his melee combat skills a bit and these slowly go down to 7. Now, he resumes his training. But his progression in swordfighting increases slightly (he recalls or regains those abilities he lost or that were a little rusty) until he hits level 10. Once he has achieved this, he levels at a normal rate.

i hope that the class you choose dosen\'t but such a severe limit on what skills you can do, like in some games where certian races can\'t even do magic, ever.

While I don\'t think this idea is makes a lot of sense as initially expressed, perhaps there could be magic items that do allow you to do that. (Maybe one for each skill that lets you move points into it temporarily). They would certainly be very rare, but it seem like it could be interesting.
