Editing character description
« on: December 08, 2005, 12:49:21 am »
Hi all,

I was just wondering how players are able to edit their character\'s description. I would like to do something more creative than simply listing my character\'s religion, birth event, etc.

Thanks :)

I don\'t want to give it completely away, but you will find the ability to do this in the toolbar.  \'Nuff said.

From what I\'ve seen of this community, you never just tell someone the answer to anything.  It seems to be highly frowned upon here :(   This is a hardcore roleplay environment where absolutely nothing is free, clear, or certain.  Besides, advisors are very good at attuning people to this game and its environment without spoiling the roleplay experience.

eh... im not sure how things stand now, but the whole \'i can\'t edit my description\' thing started with a bit of missing art work/button picture.
<Rux> i wish i could say that narrows it down, but the internet is one freaky place

Thanks folks for your help! Kythag, I appreciate what you\'re getting at and I agree that in-game stuff shouldn\'t be given away (especially not on the forums). However, I feel that getting help with the interface improves my roleplaying experience; I can concentrate more on RP and less on figuring out how to use the software. I wanted to chenge my character description to something more in keeping with the RPing spirit of PS than a list of facts about me that someone couldn\'t know by simply looking at me (as if I go around town wearing a badge that says \"Hello, my name is...\")).

Thanks again folks!

Kythag I think you\'re confusing a few things. Information about game mechanics can be shared freely without any problem. It is the sharing of game content on the forums, like what to say to that annoying NPC to finally solve this longwinded quest or where the best mining spots are, that is frowned upon. All this information can be shared in the game through roleplaying but it shouldn\'t be done on external mediums like this forum.

Editing a character description or changing your GUI skin are things that can be shared without any problems though.

A word of caution on character descriptions: Do not put anything in here that is not readily apparent to someone who might see your character. Pretty much, put only information about appearance and behavior. i.e.

Good character description
Selaros Anari is a grey enki of medium build. He has close-trimmed hair and tight, yet comfortable-looking clothes. He has a furtive look about him, his eyes always darting from side to side.

Bad character description
Selaros Anari grew up in a cave in a mountain. He was an odd child...

And yes, I do think that the current default description that you get after character creation needs to be changed or removed. People should not be able to know by looking at you who your mother and father were/are, whether you have siblings, etc. And yes, people can just role-play as if they don\'t know these things, but it is easy to forget what you hear from people and what you read in a profile. The profile would be much more useful as a physical description rather than a history.

And a piece of advise:
If you want your description to be longer than few lines, start with big characteristics, gradually moving towards the small details. As in first write about what is most apparent to one who observes you and then what is less and needs more observation. Use paragraphs too.
That\'s for the better if someone meets you for the first time and wants to throw a fast glance at you.
Otherwise in this case one could get discouraged by the details in big block of text.

Excellent point. Definitely separate your description-parts with an empty line so that it is quite clear you mean to divide them up. I\'d say perhaps three sections (or so) would be worth having: the first would be for a casual glance; the second would be for detailed observation; the last would be for a description of behaviors.
