IRC gatekeeper bot to prevent bad names
« on: December 23, 2005, 01:30:55 am »
This is the idea: have Laanx run an IRC bot. When a new name is subbmitted through character creation, it posts a message to #planeshift on freenode, where the voices can !accept or !reject to accept or reject a name.

Problems:
  • abuse: intentionally allowing bad names
  • overactivity: the bot spams the channel
  • lack of need: there aren\'t too many bad names getting ingame

Solutions:
  • only allow voices to vote
  • what are the stats on this? we would need to know those
  • any is too much, don\'t you think?

the logs are here

edit: I forgot something: the bot could also put server and NPCClient status(up or down) in the topic

I don\'t like it.  I think things are better the way they are right now.

What I ~would~ like though is if the enki spawned in Hydlaa again like they used to.  That way, all the new players would be kept together.  That would make OOC behaviour typical to new players more localized and easier to look after.

Or they could just create a tutorial map that teaches them everything so that when they spawn, they\'ll know what they\'re doing. I\'d be willing to write the dialogs and \"script\" for this map if it would make things go faster, because this is needed very badly.

Hmm.  So you wake up in an abandoned dungeon, and the first rat you kill happens to drop a shortsword? :-D

scripted events are bad for the atmosphere of an MMORPG like this. the current system is probably best for the atmoshpere, but there needs to be a better way to instill the need for RP on the newbs.
