performance question - compressed textures
« on: January 04, 2006, 07:06:39 pm »
I noticed the textures are packaged in zip files, are they compressed and would it improve performance to decompress them or is the format integral to the program?

Just a thought.

I think some people have tried re-compressing these zip files with no compression option (like \"store only\" or whatever it is called :) ). I am not sure you will gain too much from it, but it might be worth trying.

Crystal Space reads zip files as a virtual directory so I am not sure it would increase performance at all if they are unzipped.  The only thing that I could see that *might* be faster is in the initial loading of them.  Once they are in the engine how they are initial stored isn\'t really a factor in how fast they are rendered/drawn.

Thanks for the answer. I think I would rather get ram then experiment.
