Hey everyone,

There is a big survey going on over at HappyPenguin.org, where they are voting on the most important linux games in development right now.

Planeshift is FOURTH out of like 40-50 entries.  We are losing to Doom3 and NWN and something else atm, and we are only 4 votes out of 2nd place.

On the topic of making Planeshift Famous, I am currently in the process of writing a letter to my local PC gaming magazine, which will hopefully be published in next month\'s issue.

I am just basically going to tell them about the Planeshift project, and how there really are nice people out there who will do great, ambitious, things for the community, without thinking about money. (Thats you guys )



So, my suggestion is that all you people out there do the same, and write to the \"Have your say\" section of your local gaming mag. That should bring a little bit of fame and a lot more people to Planeshift.

Argh, I hate register to vote things. But its worth it if planeshift get some new hits. Btw. I contacted a couple of gaming magazines in norway, where I live, and their answer was that PLaneshift was a very promising project, and that they would keep their eyes on this in the future. So go go go everyone, make planeshift famous.

As Venge said in a previous thread, it may be a good idea not to be too enthusiastic with the \'anouncing\' until at least CB comes out.  The main website probably can\'t handle the traffic right now and these boards get slow with 3 or 4 logged in users.

That said, small sites like the Linux Game Tome gather the popularity slowly/gradually.  There is another thread where you can vote for Crystalspace (PS\'s 3D engine) on the same boards, if you are so inclined.

hmm, I think I voted for Planeshift...hopefully I did, did it this morning before work so I was 9/10ths asleep so...

EDIT: It\'s hard to tell....but isn\'t PS winning right now?  Well, I guess until the other games fans find out there\'s a poll

Doom 3 is on there and so high because its simply the best looking real-time graphics engine yet created. That may not be important to you, but to some of us who are in to the technology, Doom 3 is a HUGE step forward. For god sake it bump maps the entire world, how he does that I and still maintains some kind of speed, I haven\'t figured out yet (some kind of mesh reduction algorithm from what his .plan file has said).

That being said...PlaneShift is an awsome game, and has a ton of potential for gameplay I hope it gets to #1, simply because I don\'t think commercial games should even be on that list (thats just my opinion).

From what I\'ve seen, Carmack trades off the ability to do normal mapping for lower poly count models.  Many games are now doing this (ie STALKER, Unreal 2, etc.)  What I think is truely sweet in DOOM 3 is the per-poly hit detection and its associated physics engine (very modifiable world).  Of course, all the scenes I\'ve seen are inside small areas and the game is supposed to be a bunch of cramped hallways, making the culling much easier and less other stuff to deal with.

That said, CS now has (or soon will according to Jorrit) normal mapping.  If the engine ever sheds some of its other major bugs, the level devs take advantage of the features, and the players buy somewhat  up to date graphics cards, then PS could have some even prettier areas than it has now.

I don\'t know if this was posted is another thread or not, but PS \'officially\' won the Most Promising Linux Game Project award.  There is a link on /. about the poll, so the site may be slow for a while.
