Client download
« on: August 01, 2006, 06:55:12 pm »
Hello,

I'm downloading the client using BT according the site recommandations.
There are only two partners, so it's quite slow...

I think there are two possible reasons :
- People don't share the game using BT
- As the client download is updated, their share dosen't match the current version

So, I got an idea.

What about a very small client based on BT. I mean... A BT client, with an installation module.
That should be the "updater", and it should be only several MB weight.
Then, all downloaded parts should remain on the player computer, and shared automaticaly using this updater.
So, each time a player launch the game, he should share automatically all updates he got.

Then, when a new player installs the game, he downloads the updater only, using regular http download (1-3 MB)
Then when he starts the game, the updater can find as much partners as there are currently online players, so the download should be really fast, and not using a bit of server bandwidth.
Each time the updater is launched, it consults the server to know if there are new updates. If there are some, it locks the loading process until it got the needed updates.

What about it ?

This has actually been suggested by a few devs as well.  (I think WoW uses something like this)  Not sure if we'd ever really do something like this, though.

Some people's ISPs have a upload/download limit.. some people save it for other stuff... I don't think it would be a good idea to share everytime you log on.
