3.015b Linux sound problem
« on: September 11, 2006, 02:15:22 am »
After a long time of not playing PS, I thought I would come back to the game on Linux.

I downloaded 3.015b and tried the startup.  The program seemed to run fine on Fedora Core 5, but there was no sound.  Fedora Core 5 currently has 1.0.11rc2 of the ALSA drivers from the default RPM sites.  Sound on other Gnome and KDE applications work fine.

I tried uncommenting the OSS drivers, since the emulation is loaded.  PS immediately crashes after a small "crunching" noise from the speakers.

I've tried running the update (successfully), and the same events happen.

Are there debug switches I can turn on to submit a bug report?  Is this a known problem?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Mark

If You use binary distribution of PlaneShift - delete alsa libraries from <planeshift_install_dir>/libs, let the game use those installed in your system.
Again - try to add a line:

SndSys.Driver.ALSA.SoundBufferms = 150

to psclient.cfg, You may need to change the number to something higher or lower.

What sound card have You ? With SB Live! 5.1 I can't get rid of all problems, while sound chip integrated on motherboard (poorly supported by alsa) gives more stable sound.

Wired_Crawlers suggestions are the best to try first.  However if all else fails try activating oss again, but this time add

SndSys.Driver = crystalspace.sndsys.software.driver.oss

to psclient.cfg

Sound works great for me in the 016 release, so hopefully it'll work for everyone else too! :)
