Progression & Skills
« on: November 04, 2006, 06:43:52 pm »
Hello!
I have a question concerning the experience/training/skill system. Its a bit complicated to formulate, so i will just explain what i did/tried and experienced:

When i wanted to go mining for the first time, i got a message that i "dont have the skill to do that" or something like that. I checked that on the skill page, and saw, that the system was right. I had zero skill points at mining. So without thinking i equipped my char with the two swords that i got for free from another player (thanks), went to the sewers, killed rats and gained experience and progression points, which i spent on training lessons for mining. So far so good, mining works now. Because i earned some money with it, i considered buying new equipment or weapon stuff. While standing in Trasok's shop, i wondered which weapons my char can wear and use. So i checked my combat skills and saw, that i have zero skill points for sword, only some at axe and mace. Hum...i could not go mining with zero mining skill, but how could i ever fight rats with a sword with zero sword skill? Is my char initially able to use all kinds of weapons, and training is just for improvement? Are there other skills that i can use with zero skillpoints?

Another thing is, that i have 2 skillpoints at medium armor, but zero at light armor. Does medium armor include the light armor skill or are these two seperate things?

One more question: Is there something like a techtree for this game? Telling me "for doing/using thisandthat you need thisandthat item/skill"...

Hope you can help me out here. Thanks in advance

Hiya! Medium Armor is effective when you wear chainmail, and Light Armor when you equip leather. They are separate.

There is no techtree "at the moment," mainly because there isn't that much to do :} I would say that the reason you can fight at skill level 0 and not mine is because fighting is an activity anyone can engage in at any time, but to mine you must have some understanding of what to look for and how to go about extracting it from the ground. Without training all you're doing is randomly hitting the ground with a pick. Anyone can try to kill a rat, but you need at least a bit of training to know the basics of mining.

Perhaps it would be easier to understand if all characters start with a fighting level of 1 then.

Are there any restrictions at all what type of weapons my character is able to USE? I mean are there for example more advanced swords or swords with special features that i only can use if my char has a higher sword skill?

There are some weapons that require a high stat, but to make a list of them would be quite hard - we have a lot of generated modifiers (____ Sword of ____) that often combine in odd ways. If the weapon name doesn't seem outlandish, chances are it has no requirements.

Hello,
did I hear Tech-tree?
That sounds great to me,
and if it is not that much of effort why has it not been done?  ;)
I would do it,
but i do not have the knowledge to write that kind of stuff.
If someone would give me the information i need I would be pleased to put it into words or graphical display.

The example from Lithox about the mining is a good one how you can get missled from not knowing.
Another one:
I bought myself some new armory and can not wear it because i am to weak.
If i would have known in the first place I would have not bought it
and invested the money in training first.
Also I would not have to carry it around in my backpack while i am earning the money for training.

About the weapons the same,
a simple longsword can not be held by a enki without the right strength.

One solution would be that the Selling-NPC checks the players stats and display the information
whether the player can use the item or not in a warning window before the sale.
(Just like the salesman in Real Life asks you whether you REALLY want to wear the red shirt with a blue tie at your sisters wedding)  :P
But that would be a greater change of the game, i think.
Which leads me to another thing,
i remember that it was talked about to install something like a store-NPC.
Are there any plans to do so?

Greetings Markus

lol...same happened to me yesterday  :-[
I asked myself if it is possible to see from the weapeon's weight and the character's strength if i can carry this weapon or not. because the weight is the only thing that is given in the description. neither the level i need, nor the strength...nothing. Does anybody know more about this topic?

No need to carry around stuff you can't use. Just sell it back (albeit at a discount).

Congratulations, you guys no longer need to have a 'tech tree'. you just pretty much worked the two main ones out yourselves ;)

Yes, I agree... a Min requirement notice in the Look display would be nice for the new folks. I know that it's smart to come here to forum and check things out 1st, but most people (myself included) are just in such a hurry to dive into such a cool game as this one.
...I really hate it when people call me "kitty kitty"...

I think sometimes we forget that this is a role-playing world.  Finding out what we can and can't use is part of the experience.   :sorcerer:

But even in a realistic setting merchants give you some kind of information so you can know what you need to use the item before you buy it  ;)
