If it's really such a "dead horse"...

Then why have PvP in the game at all? Various forms of PvP is still PvP. If RP'ing a whole fight is really what supposedly a majority of players want (still looking for proof of that one), and even talk about it being a better alternative, why not just completely remove PvP from the game and RP everything? ;)

Really, the whole "For the horse that won't really die" description of the forum sounds like big a moaning/whining to me.

Whose idea was it to implement PvP into PlaneShift in the first place? Was it Luca's? If so, then his views seem to be completely different than what certain people here are preaching.

This isn't ungrounded either. I keep reading things like "PS is not trying to compete with commercial games!" or "I hope it will never be as popular as WoW" but Luca states in his video presentation at CS Conference that PS, in fact, is trying to compete with commercial games to the best of PS' team and a free project's ability. Some people state that this isn't "that amateur crap that WoW is" but Luca states in the video that WoW is one of the greatest examples of a well-done and successful MMORPG. Most people call PlaneShift pre-Alpha or Alpha but Luca calls it a Beta. Are Luca and the rest of the dev team and "regulars" here even on the same wave length?

Anyway, I don't mean to start any flames. Just stating how the whole thing looks from an outside point of view.

I won't argue about this, so it doesn't turn into a whine of my own. Just wanted to point a few things out this once.

Take care. :)

Moved out of the PvP/PKing childboard - this isn't a topic for the Wishlist.

What are people here preaching, exactly?

I think Paxx's post is a rather nice one.

Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Better still, lets just remove the game client from the equation and RP everything, just exchange MSN names or Gtalk and then we can do it all in there. It would save the Devs a lot of hassle, would make GMs have a much easier job moderating, and it would then lose all its players :P

It's what the Devs wanted I think ... Players can be found on both ends and in between. The game is part of the RP and in RP there should be a chance to harm your fellow players as well. The problem is that with this harm should come restrictions. Killing for the fun of it is what we want to remove, I'd say. In other games PvP usually gives no disadvantages unless you're the one being killed all the time, those who are good at it generally gain advantages from it. Quite opposed to the real world and since PS strives for more immersion and more reality than most commercial games, they don't want to promote PvP killing but they don't want to make it completely impossible to murder someone either.

I think if people are gonna start worrying more about realism, there's a lot more important things to address than the moral dilemma of letting people kill each other for fun. That can be written off by saying Yliakum has a Romanesque, 'gladiator'-style outlook on killing (hinted by the Arena).

The more important are things like talking to NPCs (not only is it totally OOC to talk in ultra-simple english, but incredibly frustrating), mob-spawning (it's too uniform and too rapid. Spawning should be as natural as possible - like they wander out of shadows towards you), mining/smithing (there's all sorts of discrepencies in weight and value), etc.

PvP is fine the way it currently is, for the moment at least.

Well except for gladitorial battles Romans frowned upon killing other citizens just as much as we do these days.

You are right though, there are many things that need improvement and PvP is quite fine as it is for me too. I was just pointing out what I think the Devs wanted to shoot for.
