Stack multiple books in mind
« on: May 25, 2007, 12:01:27 am »
It is awkward and unrealistic to have to switch books in mind in order to switch from melting ores and making stocks to crafting weapons or shields.  I suggest that those with the needed skill have the ability to stack books in mind, allowing one to move quickly from making a stock to using it in crafting.

You can't stack different items. A possibility would be multiple mind slots depending on your intelligence or make a book unnecessary when you have a high enough skill in for example metallurgy.

Actually, I find it silly to still having to look into a book, when you reached a level, that assumes, you know it inside out. After you reached a certain level, your character shouldn't have to read up how to make a steel stock for example. So it should function without any book in mind, IMHO.

Would something a little like discovering spells from glyphs work better?

  • You take a glyph/book, if your level in some skill is high enough you can discover a spell/recipe, which you can save to the list of things you know.

It needs some refinement and doesn't map perfectly to the magic system, but it makes more sense than how I understand crafting works now to me. ( I should probably note I haven't tried the crafting system much yet. )

I like ThomPhoenix's and Rongar's idea best.  I don't know how many books of learning are envisioned, but it would be limiting to have multiple mind slots--how many is enough?  The ability to do metallurgy without the book (after level 5 for example) would be most consistent with reality.
