New and with some questions about Roleplaying.
« on: May 20, 2007, 07:36:19 am »
First off, I'd just like to say hi to all you guys and gals here. I am in the middle of downloading this game and hope that I'll have a good time. I'm not really new to the whole RP scene, I've played MUDs and been in RP guilds in various MMOs. I would just like to know what people consider role playing here. I am not the person that uses the Olde English/Tea-time kind of language.

For example many people I have run into RP something like this:

Person A: Greetings good Sir! May I ask how do you do this fine afternoon?
PersonB B: Certainly! I am quite fine thank you, just out enjoying this nice fall breeze.
Person A: Oh splenid!

While I won't hold it against anyone to be like that, I tend to play Mercenaries/Bandits/Not excactly well-manered characters. It might go a little more like this:

Me: Eh! You! How you doin?
Person B: I am quite fine thank you, just out enjoying this nice fall breeze.
Me: I see, nothin like a crisp breeze eh?

I usually do away with formalities and pleasantries, even when talking to people who should probably deserve it.

Also what is considered improper roleplaying? In past games me and friends have occasionaly formed little groups and have gotten into the usually banditry. In one game we held a pass for a while, charging a toll for people passing through, mugging people who didn't pay up. Some games didn't mind, but others involved moderators setting us straight. While that is not typical good guy/hero stuff, I consider it roleplaying and really, how can you claim to have  roleplaying environment if you police it? I would understand sending city guards to stop us, and I would actually enjoy that. What would be the community's opinion of those kinds of actions. My characters always seem to have a knack for living outside the law.

Anyways I hope to get some input on this, and I hope too see you all in the game!

Wayward children have a tough time in this world. You will find many who sympathize with you but more who will not take well to being preyed upon. Not all of those will file complaints, and not all the complaints that get filed will be seen as valid but you should probably expect to become acquainted with the GM staff if you follow your heart. Cooperate with them and you should get along fine. You do not have to agree with them always but you do need to accept their word is final at least until you are able to follow the proper appeal procedure found here.

I should also mention that as pvp is at the discretion of every player, it takes your victims agreement for violence and because bodies are without substance you cannot block a path without their agreement either. Some may choose to ignore your role play but you should be able to find others who will embrace it. You of course will have the same option. If you choose to refuse appropriate retributive RP you will find fewer victims.

There is nothing wrong at all with playing the bad guy, as long as it does not turn into grieving other players of course.

As long as you stick to being evil IC and remain a sensible and civil guy OOC, with OOC explanations during your RP if needed .. no GM will be able to put anything in your way.

While roleplaying someone evil you can't force others to anything in this game so you sometimes need to accept that there are people who don't want to get involved in your roleplays and will usually just ignore you. Bilbous also mentioned that PvP only occurs on mutual agreement so it is very easily to ignore evil characters. I'm certain that there will be plenty of others that do join in on your roleplays though .. of which most will probably want to hunt you down and kill you but hey :P

Either way .. nothing wrong with your RP preferences and you won't be the only person RPing like that on Planeshift.

Sounds like your character is a Canadian, eh?
:P I'd do it more like that:

Me: Oy! You! How y' doin'?
Person B: I am quite fine thank you, just out enjoying this nice fall breeze.
Me: I see, well. Nothin' like them crisp breeze, ey?

I suppose it's okay though. So long as you role-play well, keep proper punctuation and capitalization, maybe you'll avoid conflicting situations ;)

What Zan said is excellent advice; also keep in mind that some characters are stronger than they look... Kaerli  :whistling:

there are several "evil" gullds out there to get involved in if your intresred. it sounds to me like you may be intrested in joining the Outlaws or something, eaither way enjoy the game, and as far as how  you rp, its totally up to you to create your own char. I've seen some that do the old english talk, and some that have a stutter, some that are nice, rude, friendly, sneaky, and so much more, its just how creative you are or want to become really, there are some really great role players here in Planeshift, I hope you run into some of them.

Just remeber to stay in char in main or if you need or want to say something ooc use [] to denote its you speaking not you char. you have created, that causes less confussion and makes the heavy duty role players much happier :)

Welcome to Planeshift, and enjoy!

In the 6 months or so that I have been playing PS, much of the enjoyment has come from the conversations with characters I have met. There seems to be no limit to the extent of players' imagination, and not knowing quite what is coming next keeps the game alive, even newbies asking for help.
