How serious are people...?
« on: July 12, 2007, 10:17:11 pm »
Hi all I'm a brand new player, who just re-found out about the game.  (I remember when it from its early days but never played and forgot about it until recently).  I have OSX so I'm waiting for the new mac release to come out as I hear you can't connect with the old release.
Anyway, I just wanted to know how serious people are about roleplaying on a whole.  Do most people get PO'ed when you talk OOC all the time?  Or do most people chat?  Or a well rounded gray of the 2.

depends on who you talk ooc to, and what context. mostly it is a solid grey. unless you happen to do it in the midst of an active rp.
may laanx frighten the shadow from my path.
hardly because the shadow built the lexx.
the shadow will frighten laanx from my path.

Indeed, good advice... I can remember well: People near the statue cried in pain about the just killed sister, her body "hanging" down from the hand of Laanx -- and suddenly a question "Where is the sewers?"

Expect a bunch of people to be in a roleplay. Listen for a minute if you might disturb them before you ask blatant questions.

Apart from that ... most players are helpful. And if you try to make your questions sound IC, even better.

[ And to prevent people from talking OOC all the time, you might get forced to write it in brackets. ]

Hm.. This is a difficult subject.
I love RP, but in Planehift it's not working very well.

I find it hard to keep up a good RP jargon when people in RP tell you to bugger off, and this is a private conversation! ..when I seriously try to interact in god manners. This is not good role play, as I see it.
If they have a private conversation, you have the ability to create a group, or take the conversation away from public mainstream areas.

There's also some people who see them selves as "king of RP", and are constantly disturbing ongoing RP by using any chance they have to correct others "bad RP" in public chat with [..] ...and that's totally destroying the whole concept of RP. Those people should have the public chat removed from their client.

My experience with RP, so far in Planeshift, is unfortunately not positive.  I now try to keep my interaction with others to a minimum, because I don't like to be dictated by rude people who think they knows better.
The last days, I have tried to keep my mouth shut, until I talk with someone I know, or until I'm buying or selling stuff.

Don't talk to strangers and don't try to make friends!  :(

Maybe you met the wrong people so far, Rabalder.

Some people are serious, some people think they're serious, others try to sabotage anyone serious, and others play it like it's Counterstrike.

Your right! :)
It also helps allot to use a female character. ..unfortunately.

LOL Fantastic respond. I's totally annoying with those players who always play like it's CounterStike or Unreal Tournament. You say hi, and they shoot at you.

Good info.  I knew it was probably a silly questions as most MMOs are like that.

The only thing that annoys me is the people that over do the RP thing with too much "thou" and "giveth me" talk.

I don't know many people trying to speak "ancient english".

Instead, there are a few speaking newly invented languages (like Stonebreaker or Enkien).

PS Wiki is down at the moment, hope to see it again sooner than (tm).

Hello!

Well, compared to other MMO(RP)Gs I have tested the percentage of players who are into RP is much higher in PS.
The newly invented languages for the different races are really nice but not everyone has the time (or talent) to learn the whole language. I try use some Enkien words but that's all. Maybe with time it'll become more and more. I don't think that it is neccessary to use ancient english to create the feeling of a fantasy world either.
Being a female surely helps (as in the real world) to get some help from a player but it has its drawbacks too. Well, I can't complain for Kaityra has some sharp teeth and claws to keep unwanted males at bay.  ::)

With kind regards

mmm

yes, most people are pretty serious about the rp element in planeshift, most of the players that ive found on the game tend to rp constantly in and out of it
ive found that the people that dont really care about rp tend to be the powerlevelers that dont talk much anyway....but i could jsut be mistaken. there are a few people that do run around shouting in ooc about comeletey bs subjects but luckily that doesnt happen all the time, and ive seen quite a few people chastised and asked to at least use brackets to maintain the reality of the game.

also it really depends on who you talk with.
for example: ill have one friend who'll get all butthurt if i "accidently" start talking in ooc, another friend that is alright talking in ooc in tells, some who are stictly ic, and some that jsut dont care and we talk about whatever whenever, though usually when were not around other people so we dont disturb them ;)

and yeah, sometimes there are the "king of RP" types that go around and INSIST that you match their roleplaying. ive even been chastised by one of the most infamous ones (ahahaha im sure you could take a wild guess who this drama queen might be :P) to the point where i refused to talk to him except in polite company, not wanting to be rude, but im not gonna follow anyone's instructions on how and what to say unless i want to. and i especially dont likie being told im bad at rping jsut becasue i refused to play along with the absurdness and instead wandered off to talk to the trees.

if your really into roleplaying you can usually find someone or a group of people that are willing to roleplay all you want, but i have found that a lot of the hardcore rpers tend to be a bit on the snobby side. dont get me wrong, theyre not all like that...but for someone as shy as my character i dontlike having someone look down their nose at me jsut because i happened to wander into their conversation. which i mean...what else are you supposed to do?

in regards to the languages...yeah theyre cool and all but i dunnos if its really that necessary to HAVE to use them jsut to maintain a semblance of reality in the game. for one thing, whos to define jsut what to say and how to say you know?

i dunnos
maybe im jsut rambling again
