Hi there,

i always wanted to try Planeshift and now, after i got a "new" Powerbook i downloaded it and tried.
And it's really slow and behaves very sluggish. Even the mouse pointer has lag.
I don't know where to find the FPS but i'd guess it's somewhere between 5-20.
My system specs can be found here.
I tried the game with various Settings from 896x600 to 1280x854 with 15-32 bit. Makes no difference.

Did i do something wrong? Perhaps wrong config or something?
I'd really appreciate some pointers.

Same here with my G4 PowerPC 1 GHz. Heavy lag almost everywhere, especially on places like Hydlaa plaza or Ojaveda. It spoils most of the fun :( I'm glad the game works but this is the last thing to be changed. Any idea is welcome.

have you checked to see if you have the most up to date drivers for your graphics card?

My system is updated to the most recent version of osx - 10.4.10.
Afaik there are no dedicated driver for powerbooks. And if there are, i don't know where. But my guess is that the most recent driver is installed.

Well. It works now after i changed the Info.plist to start planeshift with -video=opengl. It somehow always got started with software rendering.
But there are Bugs. Like massive clipping errors. Laggy mouse control. It misses mouse clicks. It allways crashes after closing. And so forth. But it's playable and i killed my first few rats already ;)

EDIT: Another thing. After i changed
Code: [Select]
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression = false (which was default) to
Code: [Select]
Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression = true in Planeshift3D/data/config/r3dopengl.cfg it run much more smoothly!

If your graphics card and drivers can handle texture compression, then you should indeed use this. It is disabled by default since there are some macs (in particular my intel-based MacBook), for which a driver bug causes the graphics to look awful, and even prevents the game to load. Thus, the default setting is a safe solution, but is of course sub-optimal for those who can use texture compression. :)

Well. Ok. I guess it should be noted in some faq or something.

Btw. this how it lookes on my machine some times. Mostly when i'm in some building looking out. But it's bearable ;) Maybe there is some way to get rid of these clipping errors?

Hello Ibn

Where do you find the file you mentioned (Info.plist) for Planeshift. I doesn't seem to be able to localise it on my system. And I would really like to try that little change you described. Thanks ahead.

Colim,

go find you psclient file. ctrl-click (right-click) on it and select "show package content". then a new finder window appears. somewhere in there is your Info.plist.

Thanks for your quick response. I've found it, but I must admit that I'm a little confused. It opens nicely in Property list editor, but I'm not sure what key you mean, - or do you add a new one?? or change the value of an existing one??

Sorry to bother you one more time

You change the value of the node "CFBundleExecutable" to "psclient_static -video=opengl -relight".
Well. You can omit the -relight part, but i found it useful on in some regions.
