My experience with PlaneShift
« on: October 16, 2007, 11:17:43 pm »
Before you all start telling me this is a free game, or its in testing, and I shouldn't be complaining, know this: I know all of this already and I do not mean to complain, I just want to let others know how my PlaneShift experience has been so far, and I would also like to know if the game is always like this or if I just joined at a bad time..

First off, I'm a dial-up user. Thursday or Friday last week, I heard of PlaneShift via the internet, I decided to give it a shot, it looked like a decent game and hey, its free. The download took me approximately 25-28 hours. When it was finished downloading, I installed the game and excitedly ran it for the first time. I got a message saying that I had the wrong version... I ran the updater many times, each time I got a message saying there were no new updates, So I decided to spens another 30 hours downloading the later client, when that was finished downloading, I installed it and once again excitedly started the program, the servers were down... For the next 5-6 hours, I occasionaly tried running the game, and each time got the same bad news, the servers were down.

So I finally decided to get some rest, I wake up this morning, first thing I do is start up PlaneShift, The servers were actually up, I create a character, which takes about 20 minutes, due to many of the names I tried being taken already. I get my character logged in and begin the game. I do about 5 minutes of tutorial quests, which were actually kinda fun, I think the game seems alright, Then I come to a quest in which I am asked to kill a Brownish one-eyed rat, or somethign like that. I spend the next 2 hours of my day searching for this rat, which I honestly believe does not exist, I ran through the whole tutorial area many times, and could find no sign of any rats, I decide to sign out of the game and run the updater, incase maybe it was a bug that had been fixed. The updater can not connect to any of its servers. I decide to restart the game, and I get a message that the server is full. For the past 20 minutes I've gotten this mesage,

So, after 50+ hours of downloading I get to enjoy about 5 minutes of a game in one very small area..
Once again, I do not mean to complain, I would rather let others who are considering this game know how it has been for me so far, and further I would like to know if it is only me or if any others have these problems.

Well you caught the game  when its not at its complete best, when a recent  relase has just come out, so the updater will be a  bit messed up and there will be bugs ect that needs some cleaning up

( which might include your rat quest which is being discuss in the forum)

Give it a  couple of weeks or so, and it should be   at its best again

You've just started playing Planeshift at the wrong time. Starting out very soon after a release isn't wise because it usually takes some time for all the mirrors to be updated, hence you downloaded the wrong version the first time. Secondly there are usually some unexpected issues with the new version. This time the tutorial, which is brand new(!), had some issues. When a new version is released the server is also down more because it's either crashing (new bugs) or because the developers are trying to fix some new issues. Just hang in there and eventually things will smoothen out. If you can't stand these new issues, don't feel bad about returning in two weeks :)
We're not evil. We're simply amazing.
