Gye's attempt at fantasy animals
« on: January 08, 2008, 02:25:48 am »
I come bearing the knowledge of... line weight! Oh, and I also found out how to properly colour inked line art on GIMP. Anyway, this is a Derinan (der-I-nan):

They have pale coloured scales ranging anywhere from slate blue to teal to white. The males also often have brightly coloured manes that are usually complimentary to the scale colour (Like in the picture above.) The alpha male (head of the pack, usually the biggest and strongest or, in some cases, the smartest) develops stripes, usually red. These stripes tell other derinans that he is the leader (Like a silver-back gorilla). It also signals other animals to stay away. Derinans can sometimes be tamed as war mounts or pack mule type things. Another thing: Derinans have a very poor sense of sight. Instead, the pads on their feet can sense vibrations, and they also have sensitive feelers hanging over their mouths. They can see colour, but everything to them is blurry. Colours are also emphasized in their point of view. Okay, I’m done.

I might come up with more later. I’m a bit low on creativity.

The colors are a bit odd and flat, but the concept is interesting. I like the varying line thickness. I would suggest trying some more subtle details in your next work, to add a bit more depth. Or even just some basic shading/shadowing for tone. Good start. :)

If this is your first attempt then it is a good one. I have to agree with Kieve though. I find that the colors are to bright. They don't seem to mesh well together. I have a question .... what is up with the claw hand thingy? Is it supposed to be seperate from the animal? Anyway so far so good. Keep it up and I bet you will be a GIMP expert in no time. :) Good luck to you and post more when you get a chance. Would love to see the improvement.

The claw thing is to show the pads on the feet. Also, I'm working on something now. Trying shading.

It all makes sense now! Anyhow, good luck with your shading. Post it when you get a chance. :D

Okay, so GIMP decided to crash when I was ALMOST finished. Oh well. Because I am a dragon obsessed lunatic, I did a dragon afterwards (I know there aren't dragons in PS, but I had to draw one.)

Okay, and another drawing:

That's Voyde, a sadistic Death Realm guardian. Most ofthis was me going crazy with the galaxy brush xD
