Standard ati issues. WHY DIDN'T I GET A NVIDIA?!

Game was displaying the character fine, but all the textures for the world where black. So I assumed it was a gfx drive issue.
So, I followed this guide: Ubuntu Gutsy Installation Guide
All went well, when I run fglrxinfo I get:

Any ideas how I can enable direct rendering? Here is my xorg file:

(I only added dri because GLcore and glx were already there.)

You could also try to remove the entire Extensions section as ATI doesn't always play nice with Composite (although it should) and add the following:

After looking around google, I found this page.
It mentions:

DRM
Check that the DRM (Direct Rendering Module, the kernel module) is loaded and has found your card. Do dmesg | grep drm. You should have several lines of info, with samples below:

Well nothing shows up, so I assume that the Direct Rendering Module isn't loaded in the kernel. Any idea how I can add or verify this?

I have a similar setup and the binary drivers from ATI are not working for my card. AFAIK those drivers are only supporting newer but not the newest cards. In my case (Radeon9000) it works best if you rely to the open source radeon driver. This card and Planeshift under linux doesn't fit to well together and I had to do some tweaks to get a playable setup.

The guide http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting is a good guide for debugging your setup tough can be a bit misleading.

Helpfull would be to know what chipset your card has. The file /var/log/Xorg.0.log will contain a line like
(--) Chipset ATI Radeon 9000/PRO If (AGP/PCI) found
This would be helpfull to give you further hints.

I will try to see if I can get fglrx to working, but doubt that this might work.

My new NVIDIA card worked perfectly out of the box under Ubuntu.  Now if only I could get my soundcard to work properly.
