My heart goes out to the one I didn't know that well, may his soul rest in whatever faith he had.  I hope that whomever he left behind will have the strength, the courage to carry on, love to support them in their grief, and the desire to celebrate the memories of his life here on earth.

It's a sad thing to hear about. Althought I didn't know him, neither IC nor OOC.

I always have to think that this also could have happened to someone else, maybe a good friend of mine, or one of my lovely family members. I truely feel with those who knew him, who were a friend of him or whose friend he was.

There are many more things going through my mind, but I am sure that no matter what I write, a moment of silence will fit way better.

I wish Materis' family and friends all the strength and soul they need to mourn, and even more to still be able to feel joy and happiness and eventually heal from the pain.

I'll light a candle for him.

I never met him and didn't know him, but it's really sad to hear that. I just found that thread and I don't really know what to say...such things just shouldn't happen. :'(
I wish all those who knew him well that they may find the strength to go on, how difficult it might be.

Horrible sad new. Although I never met Materis, reading what has been posted, I can see that he was an excellent person. I wish I have had the opportunity to know him.  It's so horrible unfair, that things like this happen... May you have peace, and love wherever you are, Materis. My deepest condolences to his family and friends and all the people that knew him.

For those of you who were not in game at the time I thought I'd post this here:

(15:23:25) Kerol worldshouts: Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention please.
(15:23:44) Kerol worldshouts: Three days ago news reached us that a member of our community has passed away due to a car accident involving a semi truck.
(15:23:44) Kerol worldshouts: Although his injuries were life-threatening and he was not expected to survive, he appeared to be doing well for two days until he passed away due to his injuries.
(15:24:06) Kerol worldshouts: Talmadge David Bates, also known as Materis, lived in Rankin County, Mississippi, and was 22 years old.
(15:24:23) Kerol worldshouts: He started playing PlaneShift roughly 6 months ago as young Ynnwn. He joined The Warriors to better himself and was a well respected member of the community. Later, he joined The Paladins where he was promoted to High Paladin with the title Diplomat because of his ability to roleplay.
(15:24:48) Kerol worldshouts: He recently applied to join the Game Master team, and was expected to continue along the path in the coming days.
(15:25:17) Kerol worldshouts: Our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends this time of loss. /impersonate Kerol worldshout We also mourn with Materis' ingame wife Siobhonne who carries his virtual heirs.
(15:25:56) Kerol worldshouts: I would ask everybody to please stop and join us in a moment of silence as we think about what we have in life, what we find worth spending our lifetime for, and what we will leave behind when we are no more...
(15:26:59) Kerol worldshouts: Thank you.
(15:32:03) Kerol worldshouts: The entire PlaneShift team wish you all a great time - and may David never be forgotten.]

For those of you who may have missed it, the service was wonderful. Shambla and I will be posting some of the logs here and for those who wish more just /tell us and we will send the logs. Until then, here's a song that describe our feelings for our fallen Paladin and very close friend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tzLlpVP6OU
He truly was a soldier and a Paladin and would do anything to help someone.
Shambla and I loved him like family, and he will live on in our hearts and Materi's wife, Siobhonne and their game children, Artoros and Igriania.
If anyone sees or thinks of something that reminds you of him, please feel free to post it. All the thread comments and the logs from the Memorial will be sent to his family by Shambla and myself.
Thank you all for the love and support you have given, and say hello to Siobhonne and the children in game if you see them.

I just noticed this. thank you Jose Phoenix for posting that in the PlaneShift IRC channel.
*** Now talking in #planeshift
*** Topic is 'Planeshift: A free 3D MMORPG <::> http://www.planeshift.it <::> RIP Materis <::>
This has been a harrowing experience, but it is also very healing to see all the people who have come to our aid and who have shown so much caring and love and support. Thank you Izzabella for posting the world shouts from Kerol. I was going to do that this morning along with some of the Memorial Service, but since you posted the worldshouts, Shambla and I will post part of the service. Also we wish to thank all who came to the Service and for all the gifts that were left. Big thanks go out to the Dev Team and the GM Team for what they did for Materis and us as well.
