Linux + ATI + psclient = crash?
« on: May 16, 2008, 07:50:00 pm »
I've been waiting to ask this question for a long long time, but now it starts to get on my nerves...
a few friends of me and myself have many crashes of the psclient. we al have an ATI card, that's the only common thing i could find. I've played for about a year on an Nvidia card and i never got the problem.

Personal, I'm on opensuse 10.3 32-bits. ATI Mobility Radeon X3100 with the latest prop. graphics drivers installed (FGLRX)
Xorg 7.3 and KDE3.5.9 [don't know if this is of any use, but if needed... it's already posted here ;) ]

anyway... i as wondering, since other people on windows with ATI cards have the same problem of many and random crashes... could it be ATI realated? If yes, does it has something to do with the unpolished code in PS or is it really driver-related.

I hope someone can explain a little more about this. It's really annoying to have this AND not knowing what causes this.

thanks and maybe 'till we meet in Yliakum!

i have linux and an ati x300 with no issues, a little more info as to when it crashes what it says in console when it crashes, would be helpful to tell you what might fix the issue.

I would never defend ATI's ability to write a good driver anymore, but I run OpenSuSe 10.3 with an ATI Radeon X800 and it's running great.  The client is very stable with very good frame rates considering the system and resolution I'm running it on.  I think I've only had one crash since I started playing and that happened in some strange circumstances that I'm nearly positive weren't graphics related.

It may be your ATI mobility chip set.  I remember some problems with that set, though I don't know what your friends are running.

It could be other things like the amount of memory you have.  Are all your friends running on Linux too?

Thanks for letting me know there are people who are running planeshift with ATI cards without problems.

anyway... some more information:
I'm on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Si1848, has a core 2 duo, 2GB Ram and of course the ATI X3100.
So i guess the ram problem isn't exisiting. by the way, i'm always playing with sound disabled for winning some minor speed at changing maps and that sort of things. When the client crashes is very random... sometimes when i login. everything loads, i think latest is the GUI, then the game comes up (visually i'm in Hydlaa ore something) and then bam!!! I don't even get the chance to step. This happens sometimes, but mostly in Hydlaa and definatly the Arena-map.
other times, it's when i'm running from one place to another... when doing nothing (just standing in oja-center), when fighting monsters, when trading NPC's, .. nothing specific at all. i've tried to search the error log for something unusual, but i can't seem to find things that are different than other times (when i close tha application by hand)

i've only had the chance to ask one of my friends now for specific details. he's on WindowsXP home, ATI card, but doesn't know wich. has 512MB ram and gets the same sypthoms as i do... randomly crashing in amouts that isn't normal. he checked his log, but nothing showed up besides art that wasn't loaded.

the chipset has been mentioned here... i think if that is really a problem, nothing can be done to help this out. i can't imagine that i can change drivers for that under linux?
