EDIT: Right after posting this, I tried again, and it is working. I guess the server status on the webpage isn't really real time?
Anyway, any other newbies reading this. Just give it some time, and try again.
I just now, downloaded the game. V0.4.01
When I run the client, it says Servers -> Fragnetics Failed.
I searched the forums and found answers to everything, so far.
I went to my router and setup port 7777 to forward to my machine 192.168.1.103 (With tcp/UDP set to BOTH)
ifconfig shows.
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:e6:df:66:d4

grc.com's "ShieldsUP" service shows port 7777 as 'closed' not 'stealthed' So that means the port is accessible from the outside world.
However, the message in the game persists. I then found this thread about running the updater. So I did.
I got the err about the xml file "This updaterinfo.xml file is marked as inactive and will not work. Please get another one."
So I found a thread that talked about that and followed those instructions, changing the first line to "true".
I was then able to run the updater, and it worked. However the "Server Faild" message in the game is still there.
On the "New accounts" page of this website, it says.
Server Status: ONLINE Players: 111
So the server isn't down. I don't know what else to do now. I can not find anything else in the forums. So this is why I'm adding to the mess of newbie questions. My apologizes if this is not technically the correct thread to post this. I just didn't want to add yet-another thread with the same old questions.
My system:
Ubuntu 8.04 x86_64
Latest Nvidia drivers. 2 7300Gt's running in SLi mode "SFR"
Cable internet connection "8mbps down"
Gnome - with CompizFusion from git
No special lan configurations, its about as simple as it gets. One router connects all of the computers.
