I read dyslex... Let me clarify (or muddle?)
Daveus lost the updater.xml (When I closed it once using "X" instead of "enter" I also 'lost it....) So could not run updater.
went and got updater from site. First time running that version, it updates... with a lot of fails. Same thing happened to me both times I ran it first (remember, I lost it once). While it was getting a lot of 'fails' I went into IRC and was assured to wait it out. Daveus came here instead of IRC.
Not getting an answer, it appears Daveus tried to open the client while updater running. Not a good idea. So then Daveus had to run updater again, and it seemed even longer, probably because heck... 3 minutes before plus 2 minutes now... =5 minutes. But you have to wait for it to finish.... or might start over?
Then Daveus edited to give an example fail message.
now the explanation (and Devs and GMs, feel free to correct or add to). When you 'lost' your updater, you had to install the older one.. which has to update ... and then update the updates... and so on.. until it gets it right. think of upgrading dos 6.2 to windows XP. Even if an updater existed, it would take days. this is like that, only less so. (or update a 57 Chevy to current emission standards (blasphemy!))
so, close updater only by entering enter, and you won't lose it. If you do lose it, be patient. the updater provided works... give it time. which you did, eventually. So I guess I should say "go have a drink of water, look at the forums, look for any other entries of interest.. not just your problem, but any posts since your last visit. If there is still a problem, and no one else has ever posted about it, then I guess time to post.
