brightness issues
« on: July 20, 2008, 06:27:58 pm »
Speaking of the light from the crystal, if Yliakum is just a stalactite on a larger planet, wouldn't there have to be multiple real suns for the day and night cycles to be about the same length. With only one sun I would think that the night would be a lot longer than day.

I don't know about you, but it already seems like night's longer than day. It's always so dark whenever I play.

That is an engine issue or issue with your monitor not a settings issue in anyway.

So it's my computer causing the road from Hydlaa to the magic shop (until getting into the forest sector) to be nearly impossible to see through? I always have to play on fullbright, but even then it doesn't light all of the maps so that I can see properly.

:offtopic: :offtopic: :offtopic: first you must run the updater and this should be split as it has nothing to do with the thread it is. also 85% of all maps do no longer work with --fullbright and you should not even try that as it will have no effect.

Shaman, if you are still having brightness issues and happen to be using Nvidia drivers or have a graphics card control panel to go to, try changing the gamma and/or brightness there.  With the windows's version Nvidia installs it is pretty nice, you can set the changes to occur only when you load the PS exe.  With Ubuntu, I load PS, then open up the Nvidia graphics settings and it triggers the gamma changes.  My LCD monitor is maxed out on brightness and still really dark without making this adjustment, I can't even see my character at some places.  This helps a lot, brightens up all maps.  All monitors and graphics cards are different, so it is tough for the game to work for each.  Though someday this type of adjustment in PS setup would be a nice add.  I'm sure if you have an ATI card, there should be very similar settings somewhere.  Need any help with it, post some specs and we can see what you can do.

On my laptop I have this exact issue, it is literally pure black unless you zoom out so far that you see the silhouette of the buildings in the sky, but it takes me sometimes 10 minutes to find the entrance of the gate into Hydlaa from the hybdr road. (This is using onboard intel graphics, not Nvidia as someone else mentioned).

I checked the graphics options on a Lenovo laptop with the 965 Intel graphics chip, O/S Vista 32-bit Premium.  They have options for the Intel graphics chip which you get to by right clicking the Desktop and selecting Graphic Options.  You can set Brightness, Contrast and Gamma, and even select a profile that once selected will load up an application, which I assume you can map to PS.

Seems like this thread is a bit old news, but figured I'd post in case someone new runs into the brightness issue.  The new updated maps seem to have improved in brightness for me at least.

There seems to be a new issue in the bronze doors eagle fortress area.  Today I can barely see the path at all, certainly not enough to walk on it.  And it's 3pm, game time.

I agree that in general the game is way too dark.  Yes, I can crank up my gamma and mess up all my other applications, but really-- should we have to do that?  Why not set the light maps so that typical in-game lighting is of average luminance?  Games should be about fun, not eye strain.

Lest it need be said, I greatly enjoy planeshift.  This is a critique, not a complaint.

most people that play planeshift even on laptops have no issues with brightness ingame, those that do  must cope till changes are made to help them. also changing lightmaps will not fix the issue.
