Objects appear as white boxes?!

  please help. for some reason all my items appear as white boxes. i cant tell when iron melts and things like that! its very annoying please help me!!!!!

What graphics card and operating system do you use?  Linux plus Intel or ATI have some issues that can be found addressed here and there in the linux support forums.  Windows I'm not as certain about but knowing the platform an issue happens on can help us figure out whats going wrong.
