bad lag?
« on: January 07, 2009, 12:08:56 pm »
Hi,

so at the login screen, I get a ping of 1000-2000 - this is normal, I live in east africa with a pretty bad connection, and this sort of ping is pretty standard for me. but when I go in the game, my actual lag is about 10 seconds or so - for example, when i try to loot a rat after ive killed it, it takes like 10ish seconds before the loot window pops up, and sometimes the rat even disappears and then I get a reply saying 'there is no target selected', even though i typed /loot right after the rat died :S

my system is:
osx 10.5.5
3GB ram
128MB graphics card, ATI Radeon X1600
2.1 ghz intel core2duo

I've turned off sound, shadows, and put on adaptive distance..helps very slightly. what could be the cause of this extra lag?

Paragraphs of text being sent via the chat will also demonstrate this.  Sometimes it's so bad, that paragraphs will actually arrive to you out of order.

As far as I can tell, this kind of thing is widely experienced by players, and there's nothing that can be done on the client end to help it.

hm, it's consistently like this though, its not just sudden spikes. is the 5-15 second lag really normal ingame? doesnt it make it hard to have a playable experience - e.g. loot creatures before the bodies vanish?

Do you know the command ping? (Different from the 'ping' that displayed on the login screen). Then you can do a "ping laanx.fragnetics.com" and see if that values are as high - and maybe ping something else like "ping hydlaaplaza.com"
So we see if it's really a network problem or if your client somehow delays it

Not nearly as bad as the lag I have while playing :s

you're having some network issue as your loosing packets and the times are high.

It's not that. I live in east africa, the connection is sh*t, and these are the times/loss I'd expect to see. the actual ingame lag is much more than 1000, it's more like 10-15 seconds, which is the problem I'm having. other MMORPGs I try on the same connection dont give the same sort of lag either.

Humm... that is really slow and let's not start to speak about the packet loss  >o)

But it could also be something for the mac-section of the forum, 10 seconds until  a window opens is definetly too much... Im not sure if this is a pure network problem (of course, at higher network load ingame there are possibly more packets lost what wouldn't help...)

thanks for the help, i made a topic in the osx area to see if that could help.

out of curiousity, do you come from the island of zanzibar?
