LIbrary Improvements
« on: April 04, 2009, 05:33:34 pm »
Ok, I was wandering through the library one day, looking at the books, they were all so extremly boreing... So I had an idea, what if players could pay Jayose to put books into the library, and you could decide if you wanted the books for sale or for rent, and after rent was up maybe a spell that brings the book back? or a time to have it back, and if you don't the spell has somewhat of a penalty on you? But you had to reserve time to put your books in the librarys many shelves, this would be a way to make money of writing, because not many people will buy a book when you sell it like swords, it just doesn't work, even if it is a self help book, people just won't spend the tria, this would influence more writers as apposed to crafters, and fighters, which is just another "craft" I guess you should say.

I don't think all the books are boring, but that is just me.

I think you may also find that the books contain useful information that may help you in your travels.

I don't know that I personally would support a game mechanic to get books into the library, because I think it would be filled with books advertising people's auctions like the books I see laying around.  If you want to get a book in game, you can volunteer to join the settings team and then write for PS.

No, the best way to get a book ingame is to write it, copy it, then drop it around for people to read, or try to sell it. Joining the team is not the best or easiest way. It is just the only way to get an 'official' book ingame.

I would imagine that such a system would also fill the library with random spam, poorly written works, or works that do not relate to PS and remove you from the setting. However, being that PS is as open as it is, it would be interesting to see a person or guild implement this idea themselves in some way. As it is, writing is not the 'best' way of making money. However, alot of the books I have seen (apart from the auctions) have been of a good quality, and people take the time to write, realizing that they may not make much from it. This kind of dedication ensures a bit of quality. If writing became a money making action, it would degrade the quality of the works written, and we would be flooded with books. I think the idea would be great if it could have a quality control on it, which is something only the human eye can achieve.

The only way I can think this might be able to happen is if unofficial libraries are made by players in game so they can control the flow of books and content. I was thinking of making a library when I am rich enough. If there are enough people who are interested, you could make a guild to divy the cost of getting the books and a house for a library. If it gets big enough, book writing might become a good source of income for the talented writers.

This has been discussed before, and I like to see it.

One of the times before, I made an unoffical, underground library, where anyone can post their books (be clear about the license), all of Bamko's books may be copied into game, as long as done in whole, without edits.  (no additions or subtractions... just as is. If you want to place a "printed by so and so" just let me know, I might say ok...) you can even sell them for tria and keep it all youselves, to cover your costs.

So, check out the Yliakum Underground Library.  it is located right behind the Yliakum Visitor's Bureau.http://www.yliakum.com/index.php?board=6.0

Allow players to put books into the library and monetize from it (or at least get 5 seconds of fame, when other people browse the catalogue) and you'll end up with volumes (pun intended) of drivel, of which most will not even be remotely settings compliant (heck, I'd put my story of the pink toaster in there in an instant).

It seems that the in-game books that I have read so far are useful only for learning about the settings  - I am guessing that is their purpose. It would be nice if the books contained information that could actually be used. For example, if some of the books revealed information such as the location of a place, or perhaps a plain English description of how to perform a task - like making a sword or a potion.  ( Perhaps I have not read enough books yet )

I wrote one short book in-game that casually reveals the location of  a place while telling a story - ( ICly )  which I plan on selling... :) . Perhaps books like this could be added to the library if approved by an editor on the settings team ?

If interested in reading the short story, "Near-death at the Velnishi Cave", look for Rigwyn and ask him about stories.
