The Nuts and Bolts of Planeshift

Hello,
A couple topics have been created either using satire or something other to depict what is currently going on with Laanx’s status as a role-playing server. This topic is intended to be optimistic and helpful.

In the about section of Planeshift’s website it states, “Planeshift is a Role Playing Game” clearly defining what the game is meant to be. This lays the foundation; The Nuts and Bolts of the game itself. Role Playing is an inherent part of the game. The game’s creators did not define it as a game to “max your skills” or just “power level”.

Therefore, we can take this basic groundwork and move forward to clear away the questions and uncertainties of how to behave in a role-playing game and successively, Laanx.

IC means In Character.
OOC means Out of Character.

Since all who are now reading this topic see that Plane shift is a role playing game, then using logic anyone could naturally assume that behaving oppositely is against the game rules.

1. The Great Divide
It's clear that there is a divide between the in-game cultures of Power levelers and Role-players.

Power Levelers: Goal is to become as strong as possible by raising stats and skills.

Fine, there is no problem with this. However, when a person does not abide by the Planeshift and Laanx rules of role-playing then they need to change servers or leave. The game was intended for roleplaying.

Role-Players: It's fairly clear.

In any case, role-players abide by the rules of the game. However, I've seen whats left of the role-players become somewhat snubbish, remember if someone is behaving out of line they may be fairly new to the game, so educate them.

This is not of course putting everyone into two groups but giving a definition on each and hopefully helping to clear up any ideas on what these two are.

2. OOC and IC, correct usage.
OOC cannot be used in an IC chat. (Brackets are the exception).
This rule is being broken excessively by many new players, who most likely were not taught how to do behave this way.
Also, when a player has his name and guild tag floating above his or her head, this does not mean you immediately know their name and guild they are associated with. To find out their name and guild they must be asked in character.

Ideas for fixing: This is fixed with some previous education beforehand. While in the tutorial, these rules can be emphasized greatly. Thus, new players will be more likely to use brackets when using OOC language.

Post sound and helpful ideas on fixing this problem!

3. Powerleveling and Roleplaying, Conflict or Intertwine?

This is not to be confused. Powerleveling in itself is not bad nor against the rules. However, when Powerleveling is seen as the FOCUS of the game and then the server, then it is wrong. I myself "powerlevel" in some way. I for several days work very hard to raise my skills and stats. Powerleveling and Roleplay do NOT conflict. A person can powerlevel AND Roleplay AND follow the rules of Planeshift and Laanx.

4. PVP & Guild Wars: They are completely compatible with a Roleplayer.

PVP, dueling, sparring these are all compatible with role playing. It's a part of the game that follows the same rules as anything else concerning IC and OOC.
Guild-Wars should always have a IC background, with role play in it.

Finally...
In posting this topic, I simply wish to create a space where everyone can place a valid view on this problem, and come to a solution that fits into the game's rules.

I've heard many people say, "well there's nothing to do besides power leveling" This is a lie and only a person who is not being creative and cooperative would believe this.

On my final note, I want to say this. Since I have returned from a several year break, I have seen many improvements in the game. The Planeshift Team works hard and does a terrific job. The community is not worsened, people are as kind and helpful as ever.

If you intend to speak profanity, curse, insult or flame...Leave. This is not a topic for anyone who has an agenda simply to hurt their rivals or another other party. This is a topic for the good people of Yliakum who want to come to a solution.

The tutorial does mention the difference between IC and OOC info and in fact it tests you to see if you can tell the difference between the two. When I first started playing I tried talking to other players ICly as soon as i got out of the tutorial. Unfortunately I didn't run into any role players and  quickly gave up on this. After power leveling for some time, getting tired of grinding and then learning one day that all this invested effort could be wiped away over night I turned to role playing by joining the best role playing guild in planeshift  ( and I refuse to turn back ). I still train from time to time.

"However, when Powerleveling is seen as the FOCUS of the game"

-- I dont care .. if someone wants to isolate themselves and right click ulbers all day then fine...I wouldn't even know they were there.  However these folks should not be starting non-rp guilds on laanx ( prior to laanx being declared an rp-only server it was fine ). On the other side I don't think its reasonable to expect power levelers who have invested months and years of their time in training and establishing friendships with other players to just up-root and move to Easy-pc-whatever-its-called. A better solution would be ideal.

"I've heard many people say, "well there's nothing to do besides power leveling" This is a lie and only a person who is not being creative and cooperative would believe this."

-- I have to disagree slightly. In all fairness if one has not had a fair introduction to what role playing is then its understandable why one would think there is nothing else to do.  If anyone reading this post is a power leveler and would like to try role playing, contact me in game and well go role play some assassinations, robberies, spying, beating up old folks and much more...     It beats the hell out of pounding on NPC's for wiggly legs and claws

Ps - I agree with your writeup otherwise .. nice work.

Personally, I'm just on PS to have fun.  I explore, I raise some skills, I try different "jobs", and I stay in-character.  I don't get into the whole scripted mini-play kind of RP.  My RP is spontaneous, when I feel like it, and also when there are others around that will share an RP experience.

In other words, I'm not a "serious" RPer in the mind of some players.

Not everyone can be the super-villain or the superhero.  There should be room for the nondescript players that just want to enjoy this world and are willing to speak and act IC.

I agree that powerleveling doesnt have to exclude RP. In real life there are many people who spend hours and days and years honing their craft, whether its art or sports or anything else. So if you tend to powerlevel, you can RP that you are a warrior/smith/cook in training, or a professional. And as you PL you can throw in that personality (ie comical banter as you fight in the arena, grumbling at the anvil that kids don't work as hard as they used to, whistling while you mine etc). As long as characters are aware of the world and what is plausible in this environment they can use the game mechanics (otherwise game mechanics would be pointless to begin with). Heck lots of players RP their questing as "Running errands for guards/reffitia/etc".

Red herring is good with salt and pepper and a little lemon.

RP vs PL is indeed a red herring: I RP Kaerli PLing (as her "training" :)

Also, when I talk to people outside the PS world (I have friends IRL who play WoW) about PvP, it connotes a spontaneous activity with no backstory behind it.  This is NOT the way PvP works in PS!  PS PvP is designed to be a building-block for RP, not an end in and of itself; the tutorial should cover this.

I like this guy. He's the kind of RPer PlaneShift needs more of. Average everyday characters.

Indeed, Akkaido.

"Drahlian vs. Dwarven Star" is an epic guild war as well as an epic roleplay. "The Royal House of Purrty vs. the living curse Hagarath" is now developing for years already (and depends maybe too much on the presence of Lolitra and Hooded Oracle). Events and plots of such dimensions only happen rarely.

The daily routine has its own issues, because not everyone feels like "playing out" a whole day of life (e.g. the Stonehead Tavern staff already complained enough about miners not even getting hungry ever; and really, would we roleplay going to the toilet if Kada-El's had any? Or do we need any at all to play it?)

He heh .. funny that you mention that ... Rigwyn announced the need to visit the restroom during an RP at the stonehead once only to learn via OOC tell that there are no restrooms.

[ Its was an excuse for him to disappear for a few minutes so that the plot could progress  ... ]

Funny.
Expecting miners to get hungry is like asking a 90yo to do pirouhettes on a wire... one in a million may do it.
First you have to teach them all to speak.

Few will go past the "ty" and "sell plat 1k", which I believe is written in their foreheads.

If you really want to converse with miners then offer 15 free plat ores to miners who take a 30 minute lunch break. ;D
( They can pay full price for the food )

The Vigisimi could afford to provide the ore from their cut on collected taxes.

Perhaps 1 more ore if you take a piss break and say hi on the way to the outhouse/porta-potty/wall
