Updater on the 0.4.03 version reports successful update after server down

Having received the msg about 'not running the correct version' I ran the updater (using windows version). The updater reported successful update (after which it reports that it is now up to date).
Is it possible that the updater has installed the 0.5 version?
I still get the 'wrong version' message when I try to run the game.
Can someone also please confirm if the server running the new version is already running?
If so, should I already be able to play if I download the torrent of the 0.5 version on the news page?
Also, the torrent on the news page, is it the final version to be released at the end of the upgrade period? or is it an older one?

0.5.00 is a fresh install, you need to download the new version.

I installed the new version 0.5
My character did not carry over from the previous version. Can that be fixed somehow?
I'm required to do the tutorial again, and I am unable to because the NPCs don't respond to 'give me a quest'.
Can anyone help?

In the new version you don't have to type in what you say to the NPC in most cases. There is a new quest system with pull down menus. Right click on the NPC and then select what you want to say to them from the pull down menu. This applies if the tutorial has been updated which I heard comments in IRC that some work on the tutorial would have to wait till next week.
