pslaunch crshes the display - ATI catalyst driver 11.1
« on: February 09, 2011, 07:44:58 pm »
Hi,

I am desperately trying to install planeshift on my computer but I have display problems.
I am using Linux Mint version Julia. Initially I installed Planeshift using the open source drivers. But that generated an error message when I wanted to play (Major opcode of failed request:  129 (XFree86-VidModeExtension) every time I pressed 'Play' i the presentation menu)
So I updated my computer with the latest ATI drivers for HD radeon 4250 and I reinstalled planeshift. Now, the screen goes mad wen I lauch pslaunch and I have to turn off my computer to be able to restore a normal display.

Can someone help me please?

Well, actually I managed to make it work: I have removed the configuration file (.PlaneShift), reinstalled the game, and set the option Video.FullScreen = true in the configuration files (pslaunch.cfg and psclient.cfg).
Not sure of which action solved the issue though.

But I still cannot start the game: when I press 'Play', the window disapears and I am left with lots of errors in the console. I am not sure about the 'pandemonium will ensue.' message, and there is a very bad problem at the end (X Error of failed request:  BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)).

Any suggestion?

Any suggestion?

It is looking like crystalspace is not able to be loaded. Perhaps it's path is not defined properly? On my Fedora system cs has been compiled in $HOME/development/cs . Before launching psclient on my system it is required that the CRYSTAL variable is first defined. On my system this is done with the following command:

export CRYSTAL=$HOME/development/cs;

With that defined psclient can be called directly; avoiding pslaunch altogether.

Hope that may help while awaiting a more definitive suggestion. :)

May it help not to use "Fullscreen" mode?

Thanks for all the answers!

@Nova:
 I have only installed the PlaneShift installer, I have not installed crystal space. My understanding is that they may interfere so they should not be installed together (I read that in a post, somewhere). I am wrong?

@ Light:
I will try without full screen, I'll post a message if itworks.

if you're using X wih a 1024x768 resolution, try PS in 800x600 windowed mode, let's see if you are able to finally connect to the server. It seems that full screen mode is bugged, so better not using it.

Great! It is working at last!
I used windowed mode, 800x600 resolution and it now connects to the login page. I will have to create a new account, it seems like the one I had a long time ago does not work anymore.
I still don't have sound though, I will need to work on that too.

Thanks for the help!
