Very noob question
« on: July 24, 2010, 08:56:27 pm »
Well, I know it's actually a very noob question coming from a guy who has been using linux for 3 years but here we go...

I'm thinking about compiling the game in Arch Linux, I've been told the configuration file makes it optimized for your computer so it runs faster and experiences less crashes.

My question is, will it work the same way if I use the game compiled in Arch Linux under Ubuntu? My biggest fear is about the kernel, which might be a different version from one OS to another... does this make any effect to the game?

why would you compile it under arch linux if you want to use it under ubuntu?
but generally speaking: you can compile it under arch linux just fine, the linux release clients are built on arch linux as well ;)

but: if you want it to be portable (i.e. usable on most distros), you have to compile a static version and deliver the important libs that aren't linked in with the client (you can check the release one for what's delivered with it)
note that what's limiting you most is glibc, not the kernel :)

Thanks for your answer :) The truth is that I want to use it under both distros, I have Arch running with KDE and Ubuntu with Gnome, each distro has its pros and cons and I like to use them both.I don't mind switching from one distro to another to play (I have to log in Arch every Thrusday since I play a game called Sokker and I have the organizer installed there) but I'd like to have a stable client available for both :)
