Player named automatically changed?
« on: July 12, 2010, 11:35:32 pm »
Hello!
I've been playing for about a week now with a character I named Sambeau Zeaux.  When I logged in two days ago my name had changed to Dinicile Cayatera! The character hasn't changed, I don't know if I've stolen another players name or what happened! Anyone know if I can get my old name back?

Thanks,  Sam/Din

Sometimes GMs will change an inappropriate name. Try contacting a GM or making a petition to see what's wrong.

Your name was changed by a GM due to a complaint about it being pronounced the same as a word that is considered a racial slur. You were logged in  but did not respond to tells from the GM so the GM gave you a random name.

While the naming rules are more relaxed on EZ you still are not allowed to have some names, including names that can be considered offensive.

Wow! Thanks for the news!
I apologize if that offended anyone... I'm so used to it as a nickname I never thought about it that way and use it all the time

Thank you

It didn't offend anyone. It MIGHT have offended someone, somehow, someway. Maybe. Words are dangerous and scary, we can't allow anyone to be terrorized by words. If SAMBEAU makes you buckle, you might as well put in gay marriage in the game right now. Sorry to be critical of the GMs, but this is stupid. A Google on SAMBEAU turns up nothing that would indicate in any way that it was an offensive term. Glad to see the GMs are putting their time in on useful things.

Try this If you are clueless, Verden. That said, someone probably did complain.
Personally I find there is a certain type that looks to be offended whether any was intended or not.
I can't say if that were the case here. I would assume not on the basis of a single incident.

Verden the name did offend someone or at least they realized the possible connection to the racial slur. Ther ewas a petition filed on the EZ server asking that the name be changed since the name could be pronounced the same as the word that is the slur. This fits in with the naming guidelines for unacceptable names, ie names spelled differently but are pronounced the same as a disallowed name. I'm sure the player didn't mean to offend anyone but  honestly didn't  know.

Remember Planseshift is an international game so some names that might be reasonable in one culture might be very offensive in another culture. Something we need to be aware of when dealing with name issues.

Arnie is probably better off not running around with that name anyway, regardless of how innocent the name choice, some people could misconstrue it and pre-judge the person behind the character.

If I'm not mistaken, wouldn't this be one of those times where the player could come up with another name and, pending GM approval, have a nice GM change their name back to something of the player's choosing? Then again, maybe it turned out to be a happy accident and Arnie digs the name "Dinicile Cayatera."
