« on: May 21, 2003, 01:08:10 am »
Im just wondering if theirs gonna be a skill limit because in most games they dont go to triple digits but i wanna see unlimited it would be really cool to have like 500str or something but it would also be extremely hard to aquire such a level.

That sounds OK as long as there wernt too many people doing it. Otherwise, resources would get quickly depleted once someone got to a lvl where they could mine forever.

If you need the doubled experience for each level over lvl80, it would become nearly impossible ... it grows exponential ;)
thanks for reading

i\'d go for that ...it\'s the simplest to do and probably the best way for players ...noone would whine because he\'s reached the top skill level and you\'d need to be very good at it to gain higher a level (like in real life)

Yep, so actually there would be a kinda lvl where it would be almost impossible to grow a lot stronger, but it\'s still possible, no complaints. Brilliant idea m8 ^_^

My personal view is that there is no hard limit on skill points, just a exponential climb in difficulty as the skill(s) are gained.  IMO, the difficulty in skill gain should be based on the number of skill points in the particular skill you are working and your overall skill total.  You should also have a chance to turn skills down (a la UO) so that you can change templates (the set of skills you wish to work and to what levels) without overwhelming difficulty.  Thus, it is easier for noobs to start out with their skill total and individual scores being low.  Veterans can still gain skill as long as they play (though it will be VERY slow if it gets too high).  Newer players (with fewer total skills) will have an easier time changing templates, but veterans can still do it.

Stats (strength, etc.) should be treated similar, but I think that the chance to increase should be slower than the skills involved.

ok, on skill levels?the current system in mind has 200 as a soft limit, by soft I mean there is nothing stopping us from going beyond and magic will allow for people to go beyond.

How far can we go and maintain some balance?in the current scope I figure into the ten thousands. Then why 200???

Well, 200 is where we hope people will have about 5 skills after a certain amount of playing time.

If and when the 200 point is broken we will probably open new areas or new things for them?but for now 200 seems like a nice ceiling.

?well what if I get one skill up to 200 really really fast cause I don?t increase anything else?am I topped out? Can I not progress beyond that point? Well then your character is an idiot savant?but depending on may things yes perhaps you can proceed but not cause of one skill is 200, but because we set the limit higher.

Again this is a soft limit?the system really doesn?t break till much beyond?it is the bigger questions like, at skill 2000 can a single person kill an army? What type of spells are available at skill 2000? Is the kill all enemies spell available? I think in beta most of this will be worked out?if a person with 200 with swords vs. a guy with 500 dodge?what happens? Those types of issues.

As well as if unobtainium swords are the end all be all for smiths at 200?what about at 2000 ???? should we just come up with imposaladium and say it was just discovered?

So those are the fun things we need to decide and much of it will not be possible prior to beta, all I can say is we can easily go into the tens of thousands. Based on the system but that does not mean we will?in fact I hope we only perhaps add 100 to the skills every couple of years as we see many characters reach their limits.
