PSclient.exe Getting Deleted
« on: December 18, 2010, 04:21:49 pm »
Just in case no one read my replies containing this in another post I figured i'd start a thread so someone knows..

I've ran the repair console multiple times and it was seemingly after I tried hitting the play button that a black screen would flash and then instantly close out psclient.exe and pslaunch.exe after that. And after that happened when I started the game again, every time, i would have to do the repair console to fix the psclient.exe

Well, i learned how to bypass this but it's not working. I made a duplicate of psclient before it deleted itself so i always have a backup, but still no matter what if i try running the game psclient.exe will delete itself. this is a major problem.

I would understand if pslaunch.exe deleted psclient.exe during a binary update. I could even imagine that maybe the updating process got interrupted in a stage where a "ToDo: delete old psclient.exe" is stored somewhere related to pslaunch. Just psclient.exe can't delete itself because Windows locks executables being executed.

My "safest" advice would possibly be: Delete the PlaneShift installation (only the application folder, not your user related data), download the complete installer (in case you only updated from 0.5.4 before), and install the game again freshly.
__

P.S.: Install SP3. Really. Several software already requires it as minimum. I have seen people complaining about a "Blue Screen Of Death" because software relies on SP3 as minimum.

That makes sense.

I would like to try to download the full content and test it before upgrading to SP3 though.

Where can I get the complete installation of 5.5?

Version 0.5.5 is available from the PlaneShift website - via BitTorrent or HTTP.

oh ha, that's the same installer i had downloaded before. it does still update itself upon running after installation..... 5.5 updates. maybe the installer is packaged with old or bad files?

i mean, just yesterday i learned of this game and used the main sites mirrors to download viea uTorrent. so im pretty positive the installer i have that says 0.5.5 is the correct one.. unless someones making a bad joke and distributing bad stuff i don't understand why the software is faulty? i mean, SOMETHING is deleting that file and it's not anything to do with anything but what is in the PS program files... right?

AND i read the :

 NOTICE: In some cases the psclient.exe program remains in memory even if you close the client, so you will NOT be able to update all files while it is running. Open the task manager and ensure to end all psclient.exe processes before updating. We hope to resolve this issue shortly.

BUT, the problem is that when i run PlaneShift after installation.. psclient.exe doesn't even startup at all before or after the update runs. im talking about 0.5.5 so how can i remove it from the active processes list if it isn't there.

If we have to go through this trouble aforementioned in the NOTICE about closing psclient before updating why not just make the distributed installer have the updated files in the installer so people don't have to worry about that problem?

psclient.exe on the installations i've had won't show up in the processes list until after i hit the Play button in the main (first) PS interface.

This is the information inside my psclient.cfg IDK if it helps but if its a setting i need to fix.. please, let me know! thank you in advance.

System.ApplicationID = psclient

; *******************
; * Part 1: Plugins *
; *******************

; NB1: An entry in the plug-in list looks like this:
;
; System.Plugins.InterfaceName[.additional] = PluginName
;
; The InterfaceName should be the same as the main interface
; that is implemented by this plugin (if any). If this plugin doesn't
; implement a specific interface (like BugPlug) then just use a logical
; name that is different from all other interfaces.
; If you use 'Systems.Plugins.InterfaceName' then this plugin will
; be marked as the default plugin implementing that interface in the
; object registry. This means that you can do CS_QUERY_REGISTRY (object_reg,
; InterfaceName) to find this plugin.
; If you use 'Systems.Plugins.InterfaceName.bla' then this plugin will
; be registered using the tag 'InterfaceName.bla' in the object registry.
; This is usually used for secondary plugins.
;
; Here are a few common interfaces:
;
; iVFS           the virtual file system
; iGraphics3D    standard graphics output
; iSoundRender   standard sound output
; iConsoleOutput the output console
; iEngine        the 3d engine
; iImageIO       the image loader
; iLoader        the level loader
;
;
; NB2: a specific driver can be omitted, if it is not used.
; For example, if you just omit the sound renderer, you will
; simply hear no sound, but the program will still run
;
; NB3: Plugins will be loaded in the same order they are listed
; here. This means that if, for example, a plugin needs the video
; driver during his initialization, it should come *after*

; specific dependency in his registry

You can try and use Process Monitor to figure out which Program deletes your psclient.
It may take some time to figure out how to use this, but this Program is really useful.
How can a File just disappear ? A Virus or faulty Antivirus ? (in Fact some Antivrus Software can be configured to delete Games).  :sweatdrop:

I will use this process monitor, but as a variable i've already ruled out the possibility of the anti virus. i've completely closed it out and it still didn't work.

i will use the monitor though and post back what's happening.

um... i feel really small right now..

i opened my security suite (i use comodo) and.. turns out my defense WAS the problem.

It identified psClient as a backdoor and isolated it.. that's why it was dissapearing.. it wasn't deleted it was just quarantined.

sorry for the trouble. i assume it will work now. thanks for being patient and offering to help me. see you in game i hope.

I already had such a suspicion... If it is neither psclient nor pslaunch who delete it, then it might have been an overprotective security suite. On one hand you get annoyed by all the hundreds of useless warnings per day, on the other hand you don't get warned about a really serious activity (moving a normal application into quarantine)...

Not without a good reason, the german c't Magazine recommends the Windows internal firewall plus a simple but known-good antivirus over all other "All-in-one Security Suites". The more they claim to be able to, the more mistakes they make. And to be true ... "Comodo" doesn't ring any bells for me when I think about "known-good antivirus software"...

P.S.: You really have only "2 mb ram" (see your signature)? ;)
