What's wrong?
« on: December 13, 2010, 08:18:53 am »
Hallo! I want to test this game PlaneShift, and I'm quite new as Linux-user (Ubuntu 10.04). Well, I've load down this *.bin file, placed it in the directory I want to have it in. I've also read all I can about how to install it, and in terminal mode placed myself in that directory where this *.bin file is placed. I tried to use "chmod x PlaneShift-v0.5.2.1-x86.bin", but the terminal answed that it dont know the command "x", and it don't find this *.bin-file. Then I changed the terminal mode with "sudo su", so I get the administrator rights for my system and tryed again with "chmode x etc...". Same result. Typing "chmode --help" give me some information about flags, where "x" is'nt one of them, and that's show me that there is some software there wich should take care of this file. Turned off the terminal, and started it again, pathed me down to this directory again and changed usermode to be a administrator again. And:
root@novo-desktop:/home/novo/Spel/Pshift# chmod +x PlaneShift-v0.5.2.1-x86.bin (nothing happend)
root@novo-desktop:/home/novo/Spel/Pshift# ./pslaunch
bash: ./pslaunch: Filen eller katalogen finns inte (the file or catalog does'nt exist)
This is irritating, please help me! I've a 32-b. machine, op-sys is ubuntu 10.04, *.bin-file is adapted to a 32-b. system.

The Installation Guide says you should execute the Installer (.bin file), not pslaunch (its probably not yet extracted).
I'm just guessing here, i use Windows.  :-[

Hi ohforf! I'm try to use the installer, and to use it, the descriptions I've read says "chmod  installer" but chmode complain at "x" (don't know that flag) and it don't find the installer, despite it's in the same directory as I worked in. When I tryed the second time, I get the prompt wihtout any complains, and then I trie the second command. But the first command doesn't did anything with the installer, why? The software that the command "chmod" belong to, must be there, else the op should complain about unknown command? So, what to do?

Of course you will need to execute the installer after you flagged the *.bin file as executable. But you seem to know so little about Linux in general ... you should really try to get "live help" in a matching IRC channel, instead of asking in a forum where we have only little chance to guide you slowly step by step without bloating this thread.

The reason why I believe that you only know very little about Linux is just the fact that you complain about "I get the prompt wihtout any complains". That is absolutely common for Linux. You don't get any reply when your command was executed without error. "No news is good news" in Linux.

People who know a little more about Linux would probably check with a long-style list command (ls -l) if the executable flag was added successfully.

People who know a little more about Linux would probably read the manual about chmod (man chmod) to learn about its correct syntax.

Try to get live help. One good place might be the channel "#planeshift-build" on the IRC server "chat.freenode.net"; you can use the webchat provided on http://webchat.freenode.net if you don't know any IRC clients.

If I understood enough, your installer *is* PlaneShift-v0.5.2.1-x86.bin.

now, you seem to have applied the execution flag on this file, if the prompt doesn't complain.
you can also use the mouse, locate the file on Nautilus window manager, right-click on this file > Properties >permissions  and check if the execution flag is selected.
next step should be to actually launch it on terminal.

try:

./PlaneShift-v0.5.2.1-x86.bin

and the installation should start

also that install file is too old, you need the 0.5.4 one and soon to be 0.5.5

Hi every one, thanks for the replies! Yes, I'm a newbee on Linux, have used it for nearly 3 month by now. I should try your advises after this writing, and I've found out that this is'nt the right forum for my problem, I think I'll ask the Ubuntu community for technical help instead, and return to this forum if I get some problems with the PlaneShift game, if, or when, I get it to work. Thanks for your help anyway!

Hi again! I'm really a newbee, after searce on the net for an description for that command 'chmod', with results that I do'nt need or understand, the command 'man chmod' (a tips from this forum) gave me all I need to know. Well,  step 1 was to make the file executable, ok. That worked.
Next step was to execute that file. That worked too. No problem. Have a link to the game in my menu. But I can't get it to start. Return to the terminal, sudo su, pathing me down to the catalog containing pslaunch and started it with ./pslaunch. Result:

Segmenteringsfel (segment error)

I've seen this type of errors in the same situation described in several places in this forum, but no one of them I've checked, has get any answers. My computer meets all the nessesery requirements the game want me to have.

I've even run the command 'sudo ./pslaunch --repair', but the result is the same. This issue must belong to this forum -Technical help: Problems BEFORE entering the game. I hope there is a solution.

From yesterday on, the new version 0.5.5 is available. Please download this installer and try again.

In addition ... it seems that your PlaneShift client can't find essential configuration and data files. So I wonder if the installer was indeed successful unpacking all the required files, registering possibly required environment variables, libraries, shortcuts...

May I ask which languages you speak? Let's see which community may be able to guide you. I still believe that support via IRC is recommendable.

(chmod x is not a way to do it - try chmod +x ...).

Regarding the segfault - It looks like you have a problem with OpenAL configuration. Are you using ALSA or OSS4 sound subsystem?

Furthermore, "chmod" is related to the "ugo" security concept (user/group/others), the modifier usually should be preceded by the target domain - so e.g. by an "a" for "all":

All user domains (u and g and o) get the "executable" flag added:

chmod a+x PlaneShift-v0.5.5-x86.bin

Hello everybody! I should download the new file as recommended, and install it, using the correct syntax! And take a look at the irc. My native language is Swedish. I use the ALSA subsystem. All soundproducing system I've used (internetradio/utube/some simplier games/mediaplayers etc.) seems to working fine. Now I've a new file to fetch - lets hope the site where I found the old one have it!

Use the link I posted above - it is the official PlaneShift download page: http://www.planeshift.it/download.html -- there is no reason to go elsewhere.
