Can't Create My Character
« on: March 06, 2011, 07:27:52 am »
I am on a windows XP running the minimum required specs for planeshift. I can't play, however; when I try to create my character, everything goes fine except when I try to choose a race. My computer freezes for a moment and then I receive a "ps_client static has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Is this a known issue? Fixable?

Step 1 buy a new computer or get a new graphics card and CPU (getting a new computer probably be cheaper)
I had problems with ps with my old computer it sort of crashed everytime I went on

Well, you may have the minimum hardware requirements, therefore PS should not crash in general. Provided you are using also current drivers. Still, this statement is a bit too unspecific, so please tell us more about your hardware (using e.g. CPU-Z and GPU-Z, or HWiNFO32) and your graphic driver version.

When you chose a race, a model should be loaded into the game and presented on the podium. If that provokes a crash, then either the model data is corrupt on your PC, or you have set up some not recommendable graphical options. First try to set up multiple-choice options to "Medium" (Background loader to "Models" or "Off") and disable most of the checkbox options (except Loader Cache). And delete the file "shadercache" in "%APPDATA%\PlaneShift" (enter that in your Explorer address line or in the Run dialog).

Another one we have to pull all the technical details about his computer out of his nose...

First prove that your hardware meets the minimum requirements. Then we can discuss the rest.

Intel Chips are really not recommmendet for PlaneShift because their OpenGl abilities stink.
But if you want to try to run PS anyway, at least update you video driver, it is dated from 2004!   :@#\

I'm having the same problem and I'm running a mac with all of the minimum requirments. I'm really not a technical person so I'm kind of lost as to how to fix this. Any help would be appreciated!

I guess we'll have to analyse some debug output here. The release client does not create a lot of output, unless we enforce that with command line parameters. Start a console window (Win+R: cmd.exe), move to the PlaneShift installation path with the "cd" command, and type there:

psclient.exe --console --verbose=-scf

You will have to mouse-select and copy the debug output in the created console window via the system menu (dropping from the icon in the top left corner of its window). Unfortunately it is not possible to redirect this generated console into a text file. But you may also find some of it in a file called "errorlog.txt" (possibly not everything, though).

An immediate crash was often related to the sound settings (Software vs. OpenAL). In general you should prefer "OpenAL" when the Creative OpenAL installer worked successfully.

OK, Could you please tell me what I need to do in layman's terms. Like I said I'm really not a technical person and don't know much about computers lol. I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks!
