Install and Launch Error
« on: March 01, 2012, 05:29:49 pm »
As the Title says, I tried to install the game, and got an error (That I realize now I should have screen cap'd) that said there was an error on the promptrestart.

I suspect it had to do with Planeshfit trying to install Microsoft C++ 2010 after the game installed itself.

But the game folder, as you can see, is still here. But when I click on the launch or exe icons, I get this message.

I also prompted for a desktop icon, but the setup closed itself due to the error, one was never placed, leading me to believe the install wasn't finished.

On a personal note: I've been trying to play this game for so long, and something has always impeded me. Whether it be no internet, or just a bad computer. Now that I have a good laptop and a good wireless network, something like this happens.. And I'm really upset.

Would it work if someone zip'd their MSVCR100.dll and sent it to me, I wonder. Probably not, though.

"trying"?  It should succeed in it. And PS doesn't install the whole MSVC only the Redistributable package. Do you get any error messages when it gets installed? The missing DLL is part of that package so if that install fails PS will have a problem.

Just -my- personal opinion...but if you get easily upset then PS might be not the right game for you. Still hopeing you get it to work and can try it out though.

Yeah, I got the error message when the game was just about to finish installing. It said that it exited on an error code, and something about prompting a restart. I should have cap'd it.

Also, I don't get mad easily. It just seems that whatever I do, things are keeping me from playing this game. I've been trying for literally over five or six years... My Family doesn't have a lot of money, so we could never afford to buy me a computer. I had to build all my old computers from scrap, and I had them for years at a time. They could never play any demanding video games.

But now that I have a nice laptop of my own (Which is still very old, and not very powerful.. Though it handles lotro on the lowest settings..) I thought perhaps I could finally give this game a try.

I just like to roleplay, that's all. I just failed with Second Life not five minutes ago, it was full of cyberweirdo's who were only trying to get e-laid. And it's the same thing with Furcadia..... (Don't get me started on Furcadia.)

You can try installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package yourself. Sorry, I really lack windows skills and knowledge so no clue if that is a good suggestion at all. And I can only guess that the 64 bit version is needed for a 64 bit PS client..but again no real clue. But from my only very basic understanding of windows it should be no real difference if a game-installer installs the Redistributable package or you do it yourself.

I would agree with Aiwendil's suggestion. Sometimes developers assume that these libraries are present when they are not. I had a logitech webcam fail on me once, and upon further inspection, it was because these libs were not there.

Good luck.

umm did you try rebooting the computer so that the dll would be properly located by the system?

@ Rigwyn:

As far as I know, the PlaneShift installer does not assume that the MS VC++ 2010 runtime is already installed, but includes the installer and tries to execute it during the installation of the game (as you can see in the screenshot above that the vcredist_x86.exe is present; would be vcredist_x64.exe in the 64-bit PS installation on a 64-bit Windows).

Well, this automatic co-installation may sometimes fail. It happened to me once too, but I just re-ran the PlaneShift installer, and this time the MSVC2010 runtime installer could be executed without error. Might be a matter of timing that a registration process in the background was not yet finished.

Its too bad MS doesn't include these files with its OS... its silly actually. I remember thinking it was weird that you had to download and install vbrun.dll etc.. to run visual basic programs.. but now, you have to install this MSVC lib to run c/c++ apps made with msvc. Its kinda stupid on MS's part. They could handle this better.

Nah these things get updated so often that having it installed with win wouldn't do much good AS it would be too old too fast.
I for one have both 32- and 64bit versions of these packages, only reason cause i have apps that are both 32- and 64bit, takes up a lot of space though.

Too many people to quote properly, sorry.

@Aiwendil - I'm going to try installing the package. And see if that works.
EDIT: I don't have the proper service pack to support Microsoft Visual 2010. That was the problem.

@bilbous - Aye. I even got the proper dll files and placed them in the proper folders to see if that would work. But the game told me that my copies of the files did not match those of the disk image. (I knew what it meant, so I removed them.)

@LigH - My laptop isn't that powerful, so it runs Windows XP. So I'll download only the x86 version. I wonder if that's going to be a problem.

@Rigwyn - Depends on the type of Windows you buy. I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. In Service pack 3 For XP Pro, Microsoft Visual and Netframe work 3.5 are included. (They're also included in the Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate packages.)
