New to game any tips?
« on: September 30, 2012, 05:45:43 am »
Hi Im downloading the game now and I was wondering if there were any good tips before I start playing?  Also I've been wondering, are there any raids or bosses that require a group to kill?

Being fairly new myself, I can only offer a little advice.  Being new in game, their are many monsters that you will be unable to kill, but as you gain strength and skill in either weapons or magic ... you will be able to kill larger beasts.  If you enjoy role-play, try to find some people to talk to early on, if not ... there are many that can help you with the mechanics of the game as well.

Here's a little advice. Don't accept any wooden nickles.

Ask around for help, there is a steep learning curve. Join a guild, it will help you integrate into the mechanics and roleplay.

It can be lots of fun if you play a bad guy. And by bad guy, I mean attempt to be like this one character Kull Rhundin who is basically the strongest, sexiest and most famous guy in the history of Planeshift.

No. There is not even "epic loot". It is not like other more combat-oriented and less RPG-oriented MMO games.

If you're looking for raids, bosses, and epic loot, this isn't the game for you.

However, we do offer an actual roleplay community.

Well there is a combat aspect to the game so I was wondering if at one point it becomes not even a challenge.. And from what I gather there is no challenge?

Hi Torkaz, there is a great combat aspect of the game - when I started playing a few years ago I did a lot of adventuring (quests) and mob looting and skill leveling, completely by myself though - it took me a while to get into the roleplay parts.  I also think there is a kind of "epic loot" in the sense that there are rare items to be looted, with awesome buffs if you have the stats to wield the various weapons/armor.  For me, there is always a challenge, always leveling to do if I want, always more magic to learn and more creatures to train on.

So, don't listen to people who say that this game is nothing like WoW, or that you should go elsewhere if you want to go on raids - there aren't official raids, but there are plenty of group mob attacks that you both can and should go on, in order to get things that you need for quests and roleplay.

Personally, I want to see D&D people here and WoW people and all kinds of people.  This is a rp game and this can also be a questing/grinding game - because that is what got me into it - I was NOT a roleplayer.  I think that however people get their foot in the door is perfect.  Yliakum is not a place for roleplay snobs, it is a place for all of us.  And eventually you will get good at rp as well.  If it happened to me, it can happen to anyone.

Cheers.   O--)

In all seriousness, this is a different experience. Its not a replacement for WoW, Warcraft is far better and more rewarding for grinding, combat, raiding, etc...  You'll also play with lots of kids and twits there... so it has its ups and downs.

PS is in development and will change as you play. There are some cool planned things that have not yet come out yet and which will make the game more interesting. In the last year, the game has seen significant improvements and features. The game is playable, but not complete.

This can be a good place to learn how to role play if you get in with the role playing crowd. When good, solid role players get together a lot of fun can be had. This is true regardless of what game you role play on. Sometimes the theatre of the mind completely takes over and trumps the graphics when you role play.

Good luck.

PlaneShift can indeed be a challenge. Just in different ways.

Of course, you can choose the challenge to grind your combat skills to be able to kill all available creatures, first in groups, then even alone.

But there are many more challenges. Questing for an access to the Winch quarter, to get a mount to ride? Learning crafting skills? Developing in magical ways to become a master and be able to enchant crystals for protective armor? Wait, one moment ... there is a link between magic and crafting! There is a link between questing and crafting too!

And finally, there is the hardest challenge of all: Learn roleplaying a character with a personality different to yours and your ideals. Roleplaying with other people means expecting the unexpected, and adapting your play to the situation. And it may also mean to play failing, sometimes.
